Definitely agree - I went to see the non-3D version. Very sophisticated, touching and funny as you said. Very good film.

We went to see it in 2D too last night. Very enjoyable - loved the first 15 minutes esp. The whole cinema was in complete silence at the of that 1st part and it was full of teens who normally can't stop chatting on their phones/mates.
I think i've just discovered the problem with the bulk of modern film releases and noisy kids (and some adults) - lousy scripts and story telling.
This 'kids' film could teach a lot of film makers how to go about their craft.
BTW, did anyone catch The South Bank Show last Sunday? Bragg interviewed the guy behind the Pixar story - interesting stuff.

I loved it when he was employed to run Disney/Pixar he took all the "creative directors" out , they were holding the company back. He made a simple statement to them , any of them who couldn't draw were sacked.

Who is "the guy" to whom you refer?
Posted on: 15 October 2009 by Blueknowz
I did not see The south Bank Show but I assume he was referring to John Lasseter

That's who I would would also assume.
My favourite Pixar is The Incredibles. I can't wait for the Blu-ray.

Yes it was John Lassiter.

Yep, that was the guy.

Wall-E is a must see also. On blue ray it is visually stunning. But, as mentioned, it would be nothing without a wonderful script and great character development.
Wall E is one of my favourite films of the last few years - kids film or not!

What is Blu ray doing that a 1080p upscale isn't?
Posted on: 16 October 2009 by winkyincanada
The native resolution of Blu-ray is at 1080p already. Upscaling just has some smart software "guessing" at the missing pixels to convert SD pictures in 1080p format, rather than knowing what should actually be there. Upscaling smooths the look of the picture a bit and can make it nicer to look at, but it can't re-create detail that was lost when it was originally downscaled to SD. Blu-ray just has much more detail. As Simon says, it is stunning on something like Wall-E (Ratatouille is arguably the best looking Pixar Blu-ray IMO, though).
Upscaling is a bit like decompressing a lossy MP3 - you can listen to it, but it's never as good as a lossless file.

Pixar is great. They were a giant killer with big companies, glad Disney bought them and seems to be keeping their hands off his projects.
In an animation seminar I heard 2 of their guys talk about what they do. very interesting and that was just about Nemo coming out. I thought there were problems with Wall-e but over all very good, so easy to dub in any language and even small kids could understand the friendship story of different types.
so glad I bought a new TV and bluray, wonderful entertainment.
