NAS and al*** art
Posted by: docmark on 17 May 2010
I've just loaded about 100 high resolution files onto my NAS (trying the Iomega Home Media Network Hard drive) under the folder "Music." The HDX scanned the network shares & found the folder & albums. I've only had time to play a couple of files, but it seems to work. However, the album art is missing, even though I know it was downloaded with the original files (eg, from Linn). Any suggestions?

Was the image imbedded in the music file?

I'm not sure what imbedded means. The Linn files are all downloaded with album art as part of the file. In ITunes, the art shows up.

That is what embedded album art is.

My guess is that the HDX doesn't support embedded art. Which is fine as it shouldn't be used anyway.

Okay - so what's the art I see in most of the rips to my HDX?

I guess you'll have to add the cover art with the DTC. AFAIK, the HDX uses a separate JPG, stored in the same folder as the album

I dont know doctor....
I have no idea how the HDX works in that regard.
Try putting a picture called "folder.jpg" or "cover.jpg" in the folder where the actual files reside.

Tried putting a jpeg in the folder and renamed it cover.jpeg and it's not picked up, maybe it needs to be cover.jpg?
definitely ".jpg"

Try to rename it "folder.jpg". It should work.

Welcome to the forum! 100% accuracy so far.

You're kidding.....The HDX doesn't show embedded artwork on share files...???!
Only if done as separate, relational info, a la WAV format....?

Who uses embedded art these days? It is redundant, superfluous and really only applicable to people who download one track at a time.

Im not exactly sure what a "share" is. Cant the HDX simply look into the folder where the files are?
How is album art normally handled with the HDX?

is it possible to move the iTunes Share to a Store?
Posted on: 18 May 2010 by HuwJ
Hi,
I found this on a post regarding the Beta software. Posted by Nero:
Yes Michel, it is possible in the new DTC and it works nicely. You simply go to the properties of the album, and click on 'Upload Cover Art'.
I simply do an image search in Google, and choose the best resolution image, and save to a folder.
The upload seems to be relatively insensitive to the resolution of the file - it obviously rescales it to what's required by the HDX. I find anything higher than 200x200 is fine.
Cheers
John
Does this help?
If not, can't you just look in a folder you know does display cover art and see what the art is called?
Regards,
Huw

From David Dever on another HDX/Uniti related thread - funnily enough, discussing the 'simple'(not) task of playing ALAC files on Naim DA gear...
Inside the Album folder resides a series of files containing metadata for the enclosed tracks. This includes an XML file from AMG, cddbinfo.txt, folder.jpg (cover image), as well as a file containing user edits and an AMG lookup log file.
As the AMG and CDDB (FreeDB) files are well-defined, a scan by the requisite player will pick up all information related to the enclosed audio files. I've tested this with Qsonix, Meridian Sooloos and a variety of PC applications that can read the CDDB file.
As can be seen in the subsequent thread discussion, David states that iTunes isn't compliant with the CDDB info, which may explain why iTunes based files are not displaying in the HDX...?
Judging from this info, if any album artwork isn't filed exactly as above - whether a share or not - it seems the HDX isn't going to show it....? It's one thing for the HDX to have it's own preferred and default meta-data method when controlling and organising its own WAV rips, but to refuse to accommodate and play nice with other - and lets be honest, popular - alternative methods, especially in the realm of SHARES, seems slightly narrow minded to me....!
So is that going to be in v1.6 then...?!

I seem to remember there was an application on the v1.5 update CD which allows an iTunes library to be scanned and added to the HDX. I'm not in the right place to check now, but maybe another v1.5 user can take a look? Or maybe it was in the beta package?
By the way, the album art is added into the relevant folder with the name 'folder.jpg'. CD rips to the Music Store go into a sub-folder called MQ for 'medium quality'.

I just went through all of my high-res. files downloaded from Linn and HDTracks, and in each of them changed, for example, Beethoven.png to folder.jpg. I then refreshed the network share (an Iomega Home Media Network drive), and now the album art shows, both on the HDX and the HDX app on my iPhone. A bit tedious, but worth it, I think.

There are easy applications for PC that can help you do this a bit quicker, e.g. BulkRename will let you select files and rename them in one go.
EDIT: Just saw you needed to do a conversion from png to jpg as well. BulkRename won't do that for you though.
