New Radiohead

Posted by: Chris Bell on 08 June 2003

I picked up a "teaser" 45 EP of the new Radiohead album Hail to the Thief. If you are a die hard Radiohead fan like I am, then you will love this new recording.

Its got flavors of OK Computer, and some new shit that will blow you away. Recording quality it tops. (got to love the 45!)

The LP comes out tomorrow...my record store is staying open past midnight to release it.

Peter,

I am about the same age as Thom Yorke, although obviously not as wise as Mick.

OK computer is a classic, but alas I think it was them at their peak, Kid A in hindsight is pretty good though disliked it on release, still can't get into Amnesiac and don't think their latest is up to much though it may grow, hopefully.

I am beginning to get into HTTT now. The irony is that, in seeking to become more 'experimental' with recent albums, their influences have become all the more obvious with each successive release.

Myximotosis for example is surely just Thom Yorke backed by Add N to (X). 2+2=5 is very much like Fugazi, including the vocal delivery. In contrast, The Bends sounds like no one else, yet is extremely mainstream.

Just my thoughts.

I haven't worked all the way through HTTT yet but my immediate impression is that the "songs" are much more coherent than on Amnesiac and I think it will be a grower.

I got a copy from CD WOW. Copy protected, and skips on the CDX - *rse! So went down to my local indi retailer and got a pukka UK copy. It hooked me on the first play, and it's a real grower. I can't agree with Matthew on this one, I find it a highly visceral album, and have no problem kicking back and letting the whole thing take over.

I think the new album is pretty good and will give it a few more listens. I do find the fact that it is spread over 4 sides of vinyl very annoying! I think the expectations are always too high with this band though.

Well the Radiohead album IMHO is pretty poor but you may be able to get the PIC upgrade to play copy protected discs free as I did.
CD wow and Play .com have to be commended for selling cds at 8.99.

Have been waiting for someone to mention the new Mogwai album on this thread as their album was released around the same time and is (loosely) in the same style but is much better IMHO - great tunes , gripping sound and a total lack of pretension - highly recommended.

I managed to copy my copy protected HTTT on my Powerbook and re-burn. The copy works perfectly.

Bloody stupid having to copy my own copy!!

PS Looking into the CDX mod, thanks.

A word of caution for those in North America. I have seen both a single LP and double LP set of HTTT. I believe the former is likely a 33rpm USA pressing while the 45rpm is UK. I bought the 45 double-record set and have not compared the two.
