Porcupine Tree?

Posted by: seagull on 05 August 2002

OK, I'm a bit slow on the uptake with this lot, but from what little I've heard and certainly from postings on this forum, they seem worth investigating.

But where to start? Which album would you recommend as a starting point?

My LP collection ('prog' section) includes Krim/VdGG/Floyd/Caravan/Hatfields/Yes/(early)Genesis if that helps.

seagull

(Seagull, Follower Of Brighton And Hove Albion And Definitely Not One Of The Very Dubiously Coiffured Flock)

p.s. Stephen Bennett, before you mention your connections, I'll also try Henry Fool as well.

Seagull, I'd go for Signify or Coma divine, but there's a lot to like in all their stuff.

Looking at your list, I'd also recommend you have a dekko at

Elbow
Mercury Rev
Gorkys
Anya Garberek
Godspeed and Sigur Ros

If you haven't already.

All these do the 'prog' thing for me - they are more in the tradition of the bands you mention than the stuff that actually calls itself Prog these days.

PS Nick, thanks for the kind words.

Nick you win, and bearing in mind that I earn a small amount of money I have ordered signify.

It had better be good!

Nick

With all due respect Mr B., Anya Garberek, though fab, is more like Bjork than Caravan!

I agree completely! It's more in the Robert Wyatt, Henry Cow, Cuniform records sorta proggy jazzy stuff.

Regards

Stephen

PS Seagull look away now!

Nick, we've written the song side of things and Fudge is scheduled to appear for the studio sessions at the end of this month. There should be a new track at the website now, but it's not there. I'll look into it. If we work as fast as we did on this track, the album should be out early 2003 - and I'm still hoping for twins!
