Interconnect for CDS2?
Posted by: Rich Jerskey on 11 October 2003
Inspired by recent interconnect topics mainly regarding turntables.
Currently I'm using a Chord Solid to connect my CDS2 to my 82 preamp. I'm wondering if there is something out there that's significantly better.
I understand from an upper end audio reviewer that Audience makes a top notch interconnect. He basically said it pisses all over the Chord. The trouble is they're RCA. I'd rather stay with DIN until I ever upgrade to new line CD player and preamp. Any thoughts?

Tried the solid myself at home and to be honest was a bit underwhelmed (sorry!)
Thought both the Cobra 2 and the standard lead had more music.
Chord also make the Signature and anthem which I beleive are available with Din termination.
See if your dealer can organise some loan samples to try.
DNM also make solid core cables if these ar to your liking that have Din termination so you could try those.
Good luck!
Hmmm, upgrades.

The person who sold me the CDS2 didn't have original cable but the RCA ended Audience. My CDS2 had to be converted back to DIN by NAIM USA. I had been using the Chord Solid with my old CDX but I get the feeling it doesn't do the CDS2 justice.

Use the standard Naim interconnect in an all-Naim system. Otherwise you are wasting money.

I like that piece of advice. Now, is it really true? Is the standard Naim interconnect as good as the Chord Signature? Maybe I'll just get another interconnect from my dealer.

As usual, good practical advice from Steven Toy.
I have tried every sort of interconnect (including Kimber silver)but have always returned to standard Naim interconnects. I am not a great believer in 'test" CD's, but I have a recording of a steam train which surprisingly
shows up failings in the replay chain.
For example with most wires the train has great detail and yet does not sound real. It is always hard to describe how things sound, but the word 'gestalt' leaps to mind. It seems that balance of the Naim hi-fi chain is easily upset.
So stop worrying and enjoy the most realistic sound.

Thanks for the very helpful response. Not only does it echo what I've heard by so many Naim people but it's cost effective. I wasn't too excited about putting down $800 for a good interconnect.

I don't know about the Signatures but I use Anthems in my own system. They make a huge difference there*, but I heard them make almost no difference at all compared to the standard Naim i/c in conjunction with a CDX/82/180.
*My own system is CDX into Densen amplification.
All-Naim systems simply don't reveal differences between interconnects in the way that, say, my Densen amps do. Some interconnects (Naim's own) work synergistically with Naim kit and others screw the sound up in varying degrees from slightly to completely.

Steve.

I'm currently playing around with cables at the moment and have posted on initial findings elsewhere. Initially the Anthem between cd & pre does sound better over the Naim supplied, but I have an understanding dealer who is letting me have the cable for a while to judge long term 'ish...

I priced the Anthem and other similar quality cables by Chord and Audience as well as a few other high end interconnect makers. With testimony that the Naim cable stands up to these in an all Naim system and considering the price differential, it's clearly a no-brainer for this farm boy. Glad I asked!

Hello Steven,
"All Naim systems simply don't reveal differences between interconnects"
Well, I heard the differences (all bad) with other interconnects but order was restored with the naim interconnect.
What you are saying is that Naim stuff is not the last word in transparency?
Still, as a system it does appear to let the music through.
Best regards Robert

Hi,
I tried an anthem out recently and was really excited about it for a few days as it showed up more detail and had a smoother presentation, especially in the bass. But on going back to the standard naim interconnect I found that I enjoyed the music just as much, but in different ways. Cheifly, the anthem lacks the drive of the standard cable, and since I was using a CDS2/52/500/ACT 2, with detail and smoothness gains to made at all but the power amp, I decided to hold off on the anthem for the time being and let box upgrades do their magic instead.
