Pretty poor performance - only one good shot...

I'm glad the dutch lost. I thought the game was shaping up for a great second half with the 11 men of the Netherlands laying siege to Portugal's goal. Then I think came the incident that started the downward spiral. I think it was Carvalho who went down and Portugal broke and were actually in a good break, but put the ball out to allow treatment. As play resumed it seemed the players agreed (although not altogether happily) that the Dutch would return the ball to Portugal. From the drop ball the dutch player looked like he was trying to kick it off at the side of the pitch, but with not enough pace, then I think Heitinga (?) got it and surged forward, Portugal were obviously annoyed and Deco flew in on Heitinga and got his first yellow.

Anyways England will now face Portugal and face the best opposition they have done so far. They didn't play too well against Ecuador, but at times the passing was improved. Unfortunately I think we are probably going to have the same line up (maybe Neville back). I think Hargreaves did well in both games he played in and gave us a lot more down the right flank than Carragher. Carrick did ok in midfield, but the problems I think are with Lampard and Beckham. I think Lennon has done enough to warrant a starting place on the right flank and either Lampard or Beckham should be dropped to help this.

I think sticking with the 5 in midfield is the right option though, because against tough opposition (maybe Portugal, but definitely Brazil/Argentina if we progress) I think we will need that packed midfield.
