Bach - Brandenburg Concertos

Posted by: Rubio on 16 December 2005

Does anybody have a recommendation for a CD with top-notch performance/sound quality of Bach - Brandenburg Concertos? Especially it's important for me that No. 3 is performed in a very excellent way. I have read a bit on the internet, and it seems to me that the Concertos directed by Gustav Leonhard should be one of the best, but it seems very hard to find it. Any other recommendations?

Isn't everything he wrote available for download off the BBC?

There is quite a lot of discussion of it on this thread (from about half way down the first page):

As to the Radio 3 Bach, it certainly is broadcasting everything, though I think I'm right in saying that, sadly, they will not be doing any downloads this time round. I must say, that I think this is a shame, since the Beethoven symphonies download is exactly the sort of thing the BBC should be doing.

There are at least fifty different complete recordings available at the moment. To offer some suggestions I would like to know, whether you prefer the concertos executed on period instruments or modern instruments, or by a small ensemble or a big band.

As I'm a novice when it comes to classical music I'm not really sure, but I go mainly for a "authentic" and emotional interpretation. I ordered the Trevor Pinnock CD by the way as it was very cheap.

Good idea, one of my top recommendations.

You won't go far wrong with the Pinnock. It's also been available as a part of various boxed sets over the years. Razz
