Digital convert...

Posted by: Marc0209 on 17 November 2010

Let me start by saying the bulk of my listening over the last 5 yrs or so has been analog and SET's..but as a prevous Naim owner..140/hicap/72, and 250/hicap/102 i found myself wanting more....it was time for a total depature. Last night a box arrived with my brand new Supernait! Lets just say i was floored. I am running apple lossless files digital out into the DAC from an appletv. I am very impressed with the quality of the sound. I think Naim amplification has come a long way. So...whats next, any recommendations on how to improve on my new digital sound?

You may get an increase in performance (less or no dropouts), but you will not get better sound quality in my opinion and experience.

just to clarify...i have been listening for about 6-8 hours, and i have had one or two instances where i had some"skipping" or what i thought was some type of artifact. i did not check the error correction box when ripping my cd's, and attribited it to this...was this a dropout i was experiecing?

it's tough to say. Unlikely it is CD errors if happening with multiple rips.

In my experience an airport or apple tv based network always has some kind of issues like you mentioned to some degree.

What about in the context of the Naim DAC. Are the toslink inputs compromised?

I thought I read in their white paper that they preferred toslink for its neutral electrical properties that avoid loops, interference and RF generation.

I am using toslink specifically because of this.

Would I be better off with the breakout cable of my Juli@ into a coax. Or breakout>coax>BNC converter>BNC DC-1?

Thanks,
Patrick
Let me know when they put a tos out on one of their players. Smile

JS,

I get it.... I am just trying to correlate what is said in this Forum and what is written in the white paper.

Your remark probably makes people nostalgic of the days when Naim were DIN only though...

So my question again...Would I be better off with the breakout cable of my Juli@ into a coax. Or breakout>coax>BNC converter>BNC DC-1?

thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick.....Indeed, at least I thought I knew what I was doing then. Eek

Well Naim uses toslink output on the HDX, UnitiServe, and NS0Xs.

Consider yourself informed.

Another big fan of SuperNait and aTV. I found the best quality from iTunes was using USB from my laptop via HiFace/coax cable, but streaming via aTV and Airport Express is not bad and more convenient in my setup. I kind of max'd out the SN with HC2 and Powerlines, but it's still great bare.

ok....i just made an intersting discovery....i tried running digital out into my SN from my acient cd-63se, and to my suprise it sounds better than the ATV...so heres my question for the forum...any idea why?

The ATV is not a very good transport.

ATV was never intended to be an audio streamer and it is £99 after all.

You'll need to try and see. It will depend on the Juli@ and it's environment. If I found that BNC wasn't better, I would re-evaluate my setup. Wouldn't mean it was bad but it would mean it could be better. The white paper refers to computers when discussing TOS and correctly assumes that they are not optimized for the purpose. TOS is a viable, consitant for the purpose and safe hookup but perhaps not the best possible. Naim has known sources with BNC for those that don't want to fiddle and those that do want to, can. Smile

I still use DIN whenever possible.

well.....my initial intentions were to get up and running, and this i accomplished. My initial impressions were very promising...but alas...im down to earth, such a shame because the ATV interface and ease of use are inticing, but the overall sound is flat. I could keep things as they are , and listen to cd's, leaving the ATV(wife loves it!)for movies..backround listening, etc..or i could experiment with streaming directly from my laptop, or mayb a streamer like the SBT, or sonos??

Try the Sonos if you want to keep it cheap, easy and don't need HiDef.

Maybe a BNC'd Hiface and DC-1 are in order?

I'd see what the Juli@ is capable of first. That custom breakout cable sounds promising.

ok looking into a custom cable. Does anyone know what the breakout cable connector type is?

Hi Patrick -

No clue, but hopefully ESI would have no objection telling you (or the custom cable manufacturer) what the plug type and pin outs are.

When I called Redco, all I told them was my soundcard make/model, and that I wanted to connect via BNC to the Naim DAC. They then figured out the technical details by themselves.

Good luck.

Wired one half of the system - server to router, left Uniti on wireless and the impact was dramatic. No dropout at all, ever.

Did wiring one half of your system have any other effects besides eliminatind dropouts? I could run an ethernet cable from my router to my ATV...I noticed last night there are rating for this cable, i think the highest was 50??? What is the recommendation on this?

Improved response times is perhaps the most obvious beyond no dropouts.
