Female conductors

Marin Alsop of the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra aside, are there any other female conductors of major orchestras? I'm just curious really - when I go to the BSO I see a roughly 50-50 male-female split in the orchestra and likewise with the visiting soloists... but never another lady conductor. Anyone know why this might be so?
Steve.

Naim have a couple of CDs of Iona Brown conducting a Norwegian orchestra.

Sian Edwards was music director at ENO from 93-95, and from what I recall she seemed to show a lot of promise. However, given the extent to which she has faded away since, it is probably true to say she was promoted to far too soon and it did her more harm than good.
I'm a big fan of Alsop - until I moved up here the Bournemouth were my local orchestra and they're a good band. I also saw Alsop give a superb concert with the LSO last year.
But it's a valid point. I wonder why we don't get more female conductors. A quick glance through my CD collection suggest that not a single one (not even Alsop) is included. Which seems a little shameful.

My collection cotains two female concuctors. One is Iona Brown (already mentioned) on one Naim and one Chandos CD. The other is Emmanuelle Haim's rather wonderful recent Virgin recording of Monteverdi's Orfeo.

Goodness, Tam, you must live surrounded by beautiful creatures to be able to forget about Emmanuelle Haim.
