n-stream uniti connection issues

Posted by: srjudd on 30 October 2010

I have recently had my uniti upgraded to firmware 3.0. I have purchased the n-stream app for my ipod touch (2nd gen) and also use it on my iphone 4.

On the ipod touch, it seems to run OK.
On the iphone 4 it works but after a few (perhaps 3 or 4) uses over an hour or so, it will not re-connect. If I go to the setup in the app, it will usually find the uniti, but will not connect and come up with "TRY AGAIN or CANCEL".

The only way to get it to work again (even after MANY tries and hours) is to reboot the iphone.

The ipod does not seem to have the same problem. Maybe it is an OS4 issue on the iphone?

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Thanks

Yes, similar issues with a Qute and iPhone 4.
I have wired my Qute via an Airport Express and this seems to have improved things.

I have no problems using the wireless and airport express with the itunes 'remote' app on the ipod or the iphone OS4. This works great and I am a long time user. I have it plugged into optical.

I was keen to use the new 'n-stream' app and leave out itunes all together. I have all my music on a upnp server so i can stream it now with my computer off. It works OK via the uniti small screen and remote control. But the n-stream keeps crashing and i have to use the standard remote.

I am a bit disappointed in the n-stream app regarding functionality (the apple 'remote' app is great). However, the worst thing is that the n-stream app seems failing and will not reconnect using the iphone 4 OS4.

Hi srjudd, please try the following method:

1. Double click on the iPhone's home button
2. Terminate the n-Stream by clicking on the 'x' on the n-Stream icon
3. Reload n-Stream on iPhone

This method works for me as I run n-Stream on iPad and iPhone4. I don't have to perform the above steps on iPad because iPad still does not support multi-tasking. Though n-Stream does not support multi-tasking, but it's still inside the iPhone4's memory (or something else) even after you've quitted the app by pressing the Home button.

thanks for the information, p3esr

But does that mean i will have to re-install the app every time i use it (i.e whenevr it locks up and wont recommect)? Or did doing this once, rectify the issue for you for-ever? ...If you understand what I mean.

Hi srjudd, by double-clicking your Home button does not install the app. It simply lets you bring up a list of apps which you were running before (or still running, depends on multi-tasking ability). If you click on the "x", it'll just stop the app, not uninstalling it.

Thanks for the help. It does sometimes fix the issue. However it doesn't resolve it all the time. And I think the interface should be more robust than the continual crashes I get.

I was looking forward to using the n-stream app but I think I will revert to the airport express fore general streaming.

Hopefully a future release will fix these issues.

The n-stream app should be regarded as beta - it can work well as a remote for the Uniti but as a UPnP control point for streaming it is still quite buggy and very sensitive to the quirks of individual systems.

Add that to the overall amateurish approach of UPnP servers and you have the perfect storm but not as it happens the perfect product. Beta and still £22? They are having a giraffe....

I guess its more due to "the quirks of individual systems" than to the Naim products.

UPnP as a "standard" is immature and not fully standardised across different brands. If you want to use it, best stay with one brand back-to-front.

N-stream does some things very well but it is hardly a polished product. The design look and feel have huge similarities with both the Guardian app and Iain Bank's Surface Detail app. Looks like some form of template was used in the design.

I think much of the blame does lie with UPnP which is even in a world that tolerates Windows pretty shoddy.

The main problem I have is simply that the n-stream app will not connect all the time, no matter what source is chosen. It is the inability to use the n-stream as a remote at al that makes me frustrated.

If it is supposed to be beta, then it's a bit rich the price they are charging. Perhaps it should have been released free of charge and stated it was beta version. Then charge when it actually worked.

Even trying to control the radio function I find it 'buggy'

I don't think Naim would describe it as beta but I can't think of a better way of explaining it. Tried N-stream on iPhone tonight and there are some aspects of the remote applications that I do like. Let's face it a few years ago using a touchscreen to control your rig would have seemed like magic.

However, it is a work in progress.

.... One thing I did notice is that on my iPhone 4 the on screen volume slider for n-
stream is very fussy and sticks a lot. Anyone
else have this problem?

Hi Tog, I would prefer n-Stream to display the current volume level in number, and also increase or decrease volume level with dedicated +/- button, just like on the supplied remote control.

Yep - works for me.

This might be counterintuitive, as the volume slider provides direct access to the volume setting on the digitally-controlled analog volume IC.

On the NDX, however, this IS implemented inasmuch as legacy potentiometer-based preamps have neither absolute volume positioning nor feedback–mute, vol up and vol down are supported.

A good controller should always provide 1:1 function with regard to the device under control, hence the volume slider.

No real problem with the slider - but ergonomically it may not be the best implementation for a small touchscreen device. On an ipad screen - when we get a more up to date version - with larger screen real-estate it may make more sense.

My paws are small - heaven knows what it is like for people with big hands.
