Hi nap-ster ,
I put one on my BT box earlier this year and it certainly made a difference . Not sure how , some sort of deep magic probably but the speed is faster when using one of those Broadband speed tests . Well worth a go .
I'm only half a mile from the main exchange ( that hideous BT building by the Rail station in Aberdeen ) so I'm not sure if that is a factor .

If you have one like this you don't need one! Although it could stabilise your speed even if it does not speed it up!

Well I passed all the requisite requirements so I've ordered one. I'm only getting about 2 Meg even though I'm about half a mile from the exchange so we shall see.

We are on the edge of the reception area from the exchange, I think the maximum is 4 miles & we get about 2meg

I'm 2.5 miles away and we now get a massive 1.44 M on our "up to 8 meg" con line. I got more than that when we were up to 2 Meg

With all the montitoring, spying, guilt-by-association, guilty-by-accustaion and tattle-tale legislation you government is cramming through at the insistence of corporate media lawyers, its not going to get any faster anytime soon.
Your ISPs will be too busy preparing statutory reports of your illicit activities (after cutting you off without a hearing) for them to have time to worry about the "service" they provide.
Yours, with tinfoil hat firmly in place,
Winky
(Seriously, you should be outraged at what is being foisted upon you, although it perhaps isn't much better here in Canada)

BigH what ISP are you with - I think a few questions on the ThinkBroadband forum might assist you to determine if you are being looked after properly.
ThinkBroadband
I have heard that some ISPs do not tell their customers that they can get a better service and keep them on the older lever of service.

It's true Winky we should be.
But as ever we (mostly) sleepwalk into the diminishing of our rights until a "F*** me when did that happen!" moment.

It's not spying etc....it's the absolute lack of foresight and investment by mnay genartions of Government. The UK is well down the global lague table of braodband availability and performance....behind Latvia, Moldova, Andorra...see here.
Shockingly bad!

In the US I was getting over 20MB down and 2.5MB up in sururban Chicago. Now in the heart of London I get 3.5mb down and something like 600kb up...pathetic really!

Broadband? What's that? Of yes, I remember, it's something that worked for a few months, then didn't and BT won't spend the money to make it work where I live

Today I'm getting 3.3 and 470 D/L, this is the best it's been for ages.
Our up to 20 M kit is the exchange but not working yet, April 2010 apparently.

I am getting 3.8MB in Teddington through BT - but I do have the internet connectionon a dedicated phone line. According to the providers website:
"Great news, our faster broadband service offering up to 20Mb is available in your area! Based on your postcode we can confirm your area supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum connection speed to be 6.0Mbps (Megabits per second)"
So they seems to be saying they can offer 20Mb -but I will only get 6MB but I never receive more than 4MB! How do I get 20mb please BT?

You ask them to move your line connection to the new ADSL+ equipment in your exchange. Priority as usual is given to new customers, but when they want something we are 'valued" customers.
I phoned today and was told the newequipment won't be available until 04/2010. I just went on to the website and checked my line, and got a message" your line will support up to 2 meg, although THE NEW UP TO 20 MEG EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR EXCHANGE? you won't get any better than 2 meg. 3.11 meg ATM.
Wouldn't it be nice to get the same information from 2 different sources in the same business?

My Accelerator has just arrived in the post ,to do the speed test it says close all applications/browsers.Does that include Spyware& Anti virus Apps?
Posted on: 26 November 2009 by BigH47
No. Just close any apps, mind you how are going to get the speed test without any open?
I use speedtest.net and just click test now. It's only a guide and if you repeat under the same conditions, it's all relative.
