Be Honest! What are the last 5 pieces of music you listened to? And Why?
Posted by: Alex S. on 03 August 2001
Mine are:
Dutilleux: Ainsi La Nuit String Quartet. (Vinyl)
Led Z: Stairway to Heaven (only). (Vinyl)
Supertramp: Breakfast in America. (CD)
Ozric Tentacles: Hidden Step. (CD)
Steve Stevens: Flamenco a go go. (CD)
This seemed like an odd set which is why I'm asking - do we all jump from one thing to another or do most of us do a session of jazz, classical, trance, whatever.

Haydn - The Creation (CD) - Joyous
Chopin - 2 Nocturnes + Sonata number 3
(Concert at St Brides church, London - my wife playing - very proud husband)
Pharoh Saunders - Astral Traveling (from the fabulous Universal Sounds of America LP - Jazz discovers LSD)
Puccini - La Rondine (radio broadcast from Royal Opera House) Pleasant enough, but probably deserves its relative obscurity.
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (CD) - needed something to re-engage the ears after Puccini

Five today whilst ironing (! - I probably take too long just to do a few shirts and it irritates the Mrs.)
Norah Jones - new purchase and very impressed
Doves - new purchase as above
Tortoise - Standards - don't get to listen to it normally
Badly Drawn Boy - About a Boy (ost) - just like his style
Lift to Experience - Texas/Jerusalem Crossroads - fantastic music in a Jeff Buckley stylee with deep-South God-fearing lyrics! Bizarre but brilliant.
One of these days, my musical taste will hopefully ascend to something a little more erudite, but until then, what the f---.

You're right, it's difficult to know where to start with MG as there are around 100 releases, and, despite the death of Bryn Jones 3 years ago, there are dozens more awaiting release in the Soleilmoon and Staalplaat archives (amongst other labels!).
Anyway, I'd concur with the earlier post and go with something on Extreme: Zul'm, United States of Islam, or Citadel. All are pretty ambient and Middle-Eastern influened - lots of tabla, percussion and chimes. A similar, more recent release is 'Untitled' on Klanggalerie.
One feature of MG is his range of styles: from such ambient releases to more dub-related (eg Baghdad on Staalplaat, Remixs 2 on Soleilmoon), drum and bass-ish (Fedayeen, on Tantric Harmonies) or his trademark 'West Bank' style (Your Mines in Kabul, Staalplaat)
In practice, you'll find it difficult to get hold of many of the releases as they are often limited (typically 700-1000), but Staalplaat do compilations every couple of years. There are at least 20 or so that are easily obtainable:
Narcotic
Blue Mosque
Lo-Fi India Abuse
Mazar-i-Sharif
Vampire of Tehran
Azure Deux
The Inspirational Sounds of Muslimgauze
One word of warning though, a lot of the releases (not the Extreme ones tho') have very high recording levels and lots of 'drop outs' in volume followed by bursts of noise...adjust volume levels accordingly...

yesterday evening:
- pat metheny speaking of now. nicely flowing music to accompany dinner
- before that robbie williams "swing when you're winning" good fun.
the day before yesterday:
- kurt elling "the messenger" incredible singer. wanted to check out if my system sounds more engaging with the hicap going with the 3.5 or the 102. got no answer but got tired to listen to the same pieces three times in a row.

It's been a "rediscover the joys of vinyl" weekend, having had the LP12 back, fully serviced and sounding dee-licious.
Loads more than 5 but the LAST 5 were.....
Lyle Lovett - "She's no Lady"
Lyle Lovett and His Large Band - "Here I am"
David Lynley - "Tuber-cu-lucas"
David Peaston - "God Bless the Child"
Stanley Jordan - "The Lady in my Life"
And thanks Nick and redeye for the Cinematic Orchestra's "Every Day" recommendation - it's on this week's list.
Cheers
Dave

Radiohead - "OK Computer" ('cos it's the first bit of vinyl I've bought in years ... sorry!)
Portishead - "Portishead" ('cos it was that sort of dinner party!)
Talk Talk - "Spirit of Eden" ('cos once you get past the "this isn't poppy Talk Talk" stage it's stonking)
The Bluetones - "Expecting to Fly" ('cos my brother unexpectedly put it on)
Beck - "Odelay" ('cos it was time for my annual "I must try to like this album" listen. I still can't, and it's still crap)

Should have replied earlier.
'Noo Yoik' is next Thursday - really looking forward to this one, even more after finding a forgotten $100 travellers cheque and $32.70 in change from last year's trip. I'll fight over it with the kids but I must be able to get a couple of extra albums out of it, mustn't I?
Yes, it was Keith and yes you and Tom were absolutely right. He knows exactly what he's doing with LP12's and treats them with the attention, nay adoration, that borders on the licentious. There's probably a very dodgy web site devoted to such things.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Tom popped in when I was there picking it up and he sat in on the final 15 minutes of the new Lingo dem. He missed the direct comparison with the old Lingo but it was one of those 'must have' moments. Anyway, the order has been placed and I hope to have it installed by the end of the week.
Cheers

Loosely music......
The last five 'songs' played on VH-1 in my daughter's bedroom. I think her TV must have a zillion WPC and a subwoofer the size of Devon.
Back to the thread........
Last 5 album's I have played (in no particular order)
Rachelle Ferrell - Individuality
Maxwell - MTV Unplugged
Nora Jones - Come Away With Me
Rickie Lee Jones - The Evening of My Best Day
Miles Davies - Kind Of Blue

Shpongle - Are you Shpongled?
Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible.
These two came in the post yesterday, so I had to play them, didn't I.
Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy EP. Pick me up and shake me about. A good one when the afternoon dip happens.
The Thrills- One Horse Town. Current fave track.
Santana - Santana (first album) 'cos I love it.
What a great thread!

Well, bloody hell, Nick. I played Lambchop’s “Is A Woman” last night and for the first time in a couple of months, as well.
I'd had a looooooong day (4 a.m. start for a meeting at 8 a.m. in B'ham) so was feeling knackered and road-frazzled when I got in. I needed sonic balm, hence Lambchop (and bottles of Hoegaarden).
Also on the playlist was Bert Jansch's "Crimson Moon" as I was now in that frame of mind - nothing too frantic.
Followed by Johnny A's version of Wichita Linesman off "Sometime Tuesday Morning" (great album, by the way) before moving on to some early Aretha Franklin.
Felt all better after that.

Had a s**t day also. So wound down with the following:
Bach - Goldberg Variations (Aria) - Glenn Gould
Purcell - O fair cedaria - Barbara Bonney/Kings Consort
Mozart - Porgi Amor (Le Nozze di Figaro) - Jessye Norman
Mozart - Ave Verum Corpus
These got me "overchilled" so followed up with a quick burst of Led Zeppelin - The Rover!!

OK total honesty...
Got home from work and two new cd's had landed on my doorstep.
1st up Rickie Lee Jones - Evening of my best Day (purchased as per rec's on this forum). Initial impressions promising but I found this initially difficult to get into. Will try again when not so tired.
2nd up - Sinatra's songs for swinging lovers. This reminded me of my childhood listening to swing and big band stuff with me grandad - played it all the way thru with my feet tapping. Brill.
3rd up Blondies latest. After Sinatra this was a bit of a shock - its in stereo for a start so had to turn the volume down. Good pop/rock tho, especially the single.
4th - REM best of - again a bit like Ricky Lee Jones in that I feel I'll grow to like this one.
5th - Air - Moon Safari - bliss b4 going to bed!

In reverse order:
Edie Brickell - Shooting rubber bands at the stars - inspired by DS on another thread
Gong - Shapeshifter - really like this!
Gong - Shapeshifter - a fairly recent acquisition and getting into it
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - a real classic (just love "down by the river")
Hawkwind - Choose Your Masques (first outing for a long time, some tracks have lasted the passage of time but others are certain misses).
Cheers

Andy, I was introduced to this excellent album by a mate who buys 10-20 copies at a time and posts them through the letterboxes of dinner party hosts as a 'thank you' the morning after. Nice touch.
