Holy cow! I left my LP12 on for 12 days!

Yup. When I returned to my LP12 yesterday, I found it was turning, and had been for up to 12 days.

What are the chances that I damaged the player?

BTW, I thought I noticed something funny during the last week, but when I looked intently at the platter from across the room, I detected no motion. That's pretty good manufacturing!

Regards.

Hey, cool. It had a real warmingup time =) How does the music sound, after letting the LP12 being on for that long?

Hi

I never turn my LP12 off and leave it turning all the time. Probably for about 18 months now. It does not seem to have any bad effect in fact possibly a good one. wink

Phil

I'm confused. You say you "looked intently" at the platter last week. Why weren't you playing records?

Pepe,

I have been told that some Linn employees 'who should know' not only turn off the motor, but also lift the platter (?? & sub-platter??) to relieve the pressure on the bearing.

Phil,

that's about equivalent to 100 days of usage at 2 hours a day.

I'm not aware of any mechanism by which 100 consecutive hours are any worse than 100 hours on-at-a-time.

cheers, Martin

P.S. I was pretty miffed when I found I'd left a cartridge in the run-out groove overnight once!

My Valhalla would start up when the power was interrupted sometimes. Would come home from work and find it turning, begging for some vinyl!
Can't say it caused any harm. That bearing should be good for many miles. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I'm sure I read somewhere on here that if the platter is left running the bearing will wear out in approx 24 months.

Thanks all. Yes, I should have been playing some music.

Regards.

Hi

I have had my LP12 for about 22 years and it is usually left running all the time. I have not noticed that the platter is running eccentically due to bearing wear yet in fact it seems to run very well so someone speaks with forked tongue.

Gee, and I was worried when I have forgotten it and let it run for 2 days smile

Hmm, sounds reasonable.

Can't remember who told me the story now.

Ah well.

I accidentally left my CDS on pause for two days - is this something that ideally should be avoided in the future? Or doesn't it matter?
