And so.....it has come to this.

Posted by: JonR on 11 May 2005

Today the head of IT at the US investment bank I work for called me up and invited me into one of the meeting rooms at work for a 'conversation'. Now, the head of IT never calls me into a meeting unless it's about something serious, and this, unfortunately, was no exception.

Anyway to cut a long story short, my job has been put 'at risk', meaning that unless I can find another position within the business in the next 4-5 weeks, I will officially be made redundant, sometime around mid-June.

I have a formal meeting at our main offices next Wednesday when a representative of HR will be present, when I will have the options laid out to me and, I think, details of whatever redundancy package there is available.

In the meantime I have been told that apart from that meeting there is no need for me to come to work, and that I should use the time instead to do whatever I need to do to find alternative employment. So whatever happens my days in IT are over.

I know I've been complaining for some while about my job and the fact that I've been doing it too long, that my full potential is not being exploited, etc. But I wanted to be the one to tell them I was going, not the other way around! Typical!!

This could, however, be just the kick up the backside I need, and I could well see this as the first day of the rest of my life. It's just that, at the moment, it doesn't feel like that right now. I'm just a little bit gutted Frown

Oh well, them's the breaks, innit Roll Eyes

Cheers,

Jon

I'm given to understand that redundancy pay is tax-free up to around £30k, so if true then my severance would be tax-free.

It depends how much of it is actually severance pay and how much is in lieu of notice.

I got 3 months severance which was tax free and 3 months in lieu of notice which wasn't but I didn't pay myself for the rest of the tax year (about 6 months) so I only paid about 1k tax on it. In total it equated to about 10 months nett pay.

Hi seagull,

When I asked for an indication of what the settlement might be, they showed me a piece of paper with two figures on it:- one was my statutory redundancy which equated to slightly more than a month's take-home pay, and the bigger amount which was the one I mentioned in my earlier post. All they said was it was an 'enhanced' figure, so I don't know how much is severance and how much is in lieu of notice, etc.

How are the MFSs by the way? Winker

Cheers,

Jon

Do you want me to inwest it for you, I'm sure I could arrange a right nice little earner, innit ! Cool

The statutary figures are complete pants, they showed you those to make the 'enhanced' figure seem generous (ok I'm being cynical).

Don't forget that they would owe you for any accrued but untaken holiday and make sure they don't shaft you about pension rights or any other benefits you may get (e.g. I had my Bupa cover extended for the 3 months in lieu of my notice period)

Sadly quiet at the moment, we've got the in-laws over and they're watching the birthday party video.

I've made an excuse about having some work to do, which is why I'm here rather than doing something more interesting like listening to music or drinking beer in the Local Pub...

I've taken some annual leave this year but still have a significant amount left to take, so I guess this will be reflected in the final settlement. As far as the private health insurance goes I was told this would cease on termination of employment.

Shame about the in-laws eh, oh well tomorrow's another day Smile

Hi there,

Just thought I'd post an update here as I have some news. My redundancy was officially confirmed at a meeting with my previous employer in mid-June so have been out of work since then.

This morning I had a telephone interview for a 6-8 week temp position at the offices of a local authority not far from me, and I have just found out from the employment agent that I have got the job! Smile

The money works out pretty much to a little less than half what I was on before but to be honest it's better than nothing and it could lead to something else so I am happy. I start on the 1st August so I've got a week left to laze around.....!

Cheers,

Jon

PS: I think I can start to consider hifi upgrade possibilities again, but they'd have to be umm... modest ones! Big Grin

Jon

Glad to hear things are starting to look up for you - good luck at the local authority.

(Do you do modest upgrades? Razz)

John,

Really pleased to hear your news and delighted for you - will help pay for those helicopter lessons now!

Enjoy being a gentleman of leisure for a little longer though!

Well done Jon. I've been a bit busy lately and only just noticed your post. Local authorities seem to be reasonable employers if a little dull I'm afraid, not having to travel too far should make up for that though. Anyway, good luck.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your thoughts.

Andy, thanks for the heads up re local suthorities, yeah I suspected as much. Hopefully the drive to work and back won't be too bad though, and at least they have flexi-time too, which would be useful.

Jonathan, when is your flight sim test?? Winker

Cheers,

Jon

That's good news Jon. I hope it goes well and turns into something.

Remember less is more sometimes.

Less travelling is more time at home.

Less travelling in London is more time not being worried by the fanatics.

Less expectation is more oportunity to shine.

Less expense on travelling is more money to spend on the important things, hi-fi, music, etc.

Enjoy, work hard enough and be rewarded.

Harry, thanks!

Jono, sage words indeed, appreciated.

I must admit to a some relief that I don't have to travel on the tube every day right now. However if my circumstances change such that I have to again, then I will.

Otherwise the fanatics win.

Cheers,

Jon

If less isn’t always more, it’s sometimes not as less as it seems. When the work takes a dive I always panic but I’m slowly learning that it’s never as simple as reduced income. Less driving, less expenditure on consumables, more time with my family etc. I wish you all the best Jon.

Harry,

Thanks. I know it might not seem like much now, but I'd like to think that the extra experience I will get will stand me in good stead if and when future opportunities come along.

Cheers,

Jon

Not 'if' Jon, 'when'.

The crap times don't last for ever. Neither do the good ones! Thinking back, I've had some awful jobs/managers that have left me feeling lazy, demotivated and useless - almost a fraud for taking the money. After a time you think that you could never do well again and probably don't deserve to. Then a good job/manager comes along and you find creativity, energy and motivation that you thought you'd lost for ever. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's frequently circumstances, not YOU, that are holding you back and giving the impression that it's hopeless.

Sometimes you have to go backwards/sideways to go forwards. I have.

Cheers

I really must object to this serious outbreak of good common sense. This is supposed to be the padded cell. Where's your sense of responsibility chaps? Smile

And where's Mick when you need him? Big Grin

Look. I know I'm a waster/layabout/pinko pervert/will be first against the wall come the revolution/have noone but myself to blame that I can't afford a 7 Series and so on..... I don't need Mick to tell me that but I expect he will anyway.
