critical listening session

Posted by: woody on 16 October 2003

My friends and I have just spent a very enjoyable hifi appreciation evening listening to various CDs on my sistem (NAIT5,CD5,FC2 powering NAIT and CD5), B&W CDM1NTs on Soundstyle stands.
Background info: One of my friends owns a Butler Audio 5 channel AV valve jobbie, MF Nu-Vista CDP, top-of-the-range Yamaha AV receiver as preamp and some floor-standing KEF speakers (dunno what). The other friend owns MF pre-power, MF X-Ray CDP and B&W floor standers from 600 range. It must be said this is the 1st time we've done this so haven't listened to their stuff yet and I'm the guinea pig!

Overall reaction to my sistem was very positive and stuff I knew already - great detail, transients, seperation, imaging but one question they had which I have to agree with: how come it can do real solid, decent bass on some disks (e.g. Diana Krall "Love Songs" and almost all disks with analogue instruments/double bass) and fall over a bit on some disks with whereby they (my mates) reckoned an octave was missing...is this my speakers, although it's weird if it is as mentioned some disks (e.g. Krall) sounded great? Oh yeah, and the XTC CD (dunno title) one of my friends brought over sounded truly dire - very "shouty" and generally top heavy and real nasty.
Any ideas/thoughts welcome.

Any chance of anyone reading the "reviews" of the 3 systems we listened to and making any comments/suggestions etc...would be nice to leave the other subject behind. Please.

In sharp contrast to Garyi, who will enjoy himself a lot more if he does touch something.

Looks like you can't get that picture out of your mind, eh?

Also lose those white socks.

Herm has very fine taste in lingerie. He doesn't live in a dusty attic in Amsterdam's red light district for nothing. Certainly, his penchant beats PR's white socks any day.

Bad Reception

Someone please help - my connection to the Naim Forum is faulty and needs correcting.

I was reading a thread about A/V amps and such, and then this noise started intruding on my enjoyable thread-reading experience. The interference is so bad now that I've lost all touch with the original thread.

I hope my message gets through...

PR's white socks were in his profile, which was clearly tailored to attract the kind of married woman he's after* - that's why he quickly deleted those fatal socks.

I'm glad you mentioned the ol' attic, Alex - it was getting kind of dusty.

*Richard told me server data show lots of women trawl this forum looking for eligible men - bachelors or non.

Maxi Me,

Check your PT.

As the one who started this thread can I now kill it?

You mean like from a grassy knoll? Why kill a classic in the making?

Do you have an Oswald complex? Or is it just the socks you're wearing?

In certain countries wearing white socks is seen as a sign of virility... Wink

Meanwhile, Woody have you tried the HNE granite stands for you B&Ws? Certainly helped my old N805s which are just an expensive version of yours.

Alex

PS My wife is so goodam georgeous, special and ruthless that I have to have my hi-fi in a separate building, settling at home for a crappy Densen which doesn't interfere with my wife's relaxation with candles.

That's very poetic, PR. I bet only women will be able to figure out what you're saying. A smart move like this is bound to get you ahead of the herd.

<< goodam georgeous >> Sorry. Just can't get Garyi out of my mind.

x-rated

So that makes two of you. Markus kept seeing <things> too, rather graphically.

Maybe you need to get out more.

Is this the HNE cableway?

I've just realised my Soundstyle stands are not filled with anything (sand/leadshot etc)...would this make a difference.

I'm ignoring your comment on your wife, but why not post a pic so we can all comment...

Well, no, I didn't see 'things' at all. Which is a pity. herm, does your place in Amsterdam offer a live webcam or something?
