critical listening session
Posted by: woody on 16 October 2003
My friends and I have just spent a very enjoyable hifi appreciation evening listening to various CDs on my sistem (NAIT5,CD5,FC2 powering NAIT and CD5), B&W CDM1NTs on Soundstyle stands.
Background info: One of my friends owns a Butler Audio 5 channel AV valve jobbie, MF Nu-Vista CDP, top-of-the-range Yamaha AV receiver as preamp and some floor-standing KEF speakers (dunno what). The other friend owns MF pre-power, MF X-Ray CDP and B&W floor standers from 600 range. It must be said this is the 1st time we've done this so haven't listened to their stuff yet and I'm the guinea pig!
Overall reaction to my sistem was very positive and stuff I knew already - great detail, transients, seperation, imaging but one question they had which I have to agree with: how come it can do real solid, decent bass on some disks (e.g. Diana Krall "Love Songs" and almost all disks with analogue instruments/double bass) and fall over a bit on some disks with whereby they (my mates) reckoned an octave was missing...is this my speakers, although it's weird if it is as mentioned some disks (e.g. Krall) sounded great? Oh yeah, and the XTC CD (dunno title) one of my friends brought over sounded truly dire - very "shouty" and generally top heavy and real nasty.
Any ideas/thoughts welcome.

my dusty attic
A recent thread (of Garyi's, actually, quelle coincidence!) showed that I was actually one of the very few forumites who's never been even close to the Amsterdam red light district.
I know this is a fantasy thread (Steven started it) but surely Alex won’t mind if I say this notion that I live and work (or the other way around) in a dusty attic in Amsterdam is a fantasy of his borsjt-addled brain - his dream of being a poor and neglected artist rather than the tremendously successful dole con man he is.
Incidentally, Alex, I'm off to another Swan Lake tonight (my third in a row), and I'll think of you…

Nuño Alert
<P.A. Voice>
I hate to interrupt the flow of information, but there's been a Nuño sighting.

Could someone enlighten me on the significance of this?

Woody, it may have eluded you, but there's virtually no significance to anything on this thread since page 2. That's why it's such a huge succes.
Who is Nuño? That's a long story. Nuño should actually be in the FAQ, He is, among many other things good, the inventor of the word sistem (rather than system). Here's a couple of threads (that incidentally go to show that Steve is wrong to say I tease him ever since Stallion's gone).
Enjoy
Search : System? Sistem?
What will Nuno purchase?

In the
sistem/system thread that herm has provided a link to above, I did note that I was trailing him 0-3 on the mentioning-of-one's-girlfriend stakes.
The context may be different, as may be the history, but hypocrisy is hypocrisy...
Are you still with her herm?
Regards,
Steve.

back to the girlfriend stakes?
My, my, we really need to go to the letter H for Humour sometimes, Steve, and see what it says.
I really wouldn't worry too much about trailing me in this matter. I do mention Rosie at times, just as Mick does Mrs Mick, and Tom his wife, or, for that matter, Woody his wife.
And nobody minds.
Why people have reacted over time to your stuff is - I suppose - because of the pompous neediness or the needy pomposity in the way you speak of her. But let's not get into that. You may or may not have noticed, we had a really fun day on this thread, while you were no doubt engaged on weightier matters.

The goalposts have moved a little then. That's good.
I did enjoy reading the rest of the thread and the links to times past.
Thanks for that at least.
Regards,
Steve.
