252/300 in HiFi News

Posted by: John3 on 03 March 2003

I was really looking forward to the review of the 252/300 in the latest addition of HiFi News but having read it I must express some disappointment. The review itself was generally positive about the equipment but that is not what I wish to comment on here. There was a time that HFN could be relied on for in depth detailed technical reviews, which had objectivity and credibility. I take no pleasure in saying this as I have been a fan and subscriber for many years but is it just me or does anyone else feel recently their reviews have become lightweight and less informative? Whilst the 252/300 review is ok (and streets ahead of what we get in certain other mags) I just feel it should have been so much better and not so long ago would have been. A shame, as this is one of the few ‘serious’ mags we have. Also the pictures of the 252/300 (in my copy anyway) are fuzzy and do the new style boxes no favours at all - the new logo looks worse than ever!

John3...I agree totally with your comments. i too was looking forward to the detailed review of the type Martin Colloms does. He uses a CDS2 and an "old" 250.....so some useful comparisons could have been made Whilst i respect Andrew Harrisons long experience, and writing style, my one worry with him is that he uses Linn electronics by choice.....for me that casts a long shadow over any of his opinions of sound quality
