Beats being a lawyer.
Ever fired an L96, Deane?
People like you can sleep safe at night because rough men stand ready in the night to do violence.

No, I've just fired a few scoped hunting rifles here and there.
I just wonder at whether your appreciation of the beauty of the L96 encompasses what is supposed to happen at both ends of the usefulness of the rifle?

I am not sure that a modern [or even an old] rifle is particualrly a "thing of beauty." It may, in the right hands, be something which preserves other things of beauty [even freedom, which is a beautiful thing, if it exists in reality], but all too often it simply serves to be an extension of the deranged dreams and power craze of political leaders, and looses all claims to be even a preserver of beauty. Merely an extension of the megalomania of people who weald power on the world stage.

Not really, Fredrik; if politicians had to carry and use rifles, risking their own lives and possibly having to take another, they would take more care before sending servicemen to war.
Soldiers are the ultimate peaceniks.
BTW, the L96 is a beautifully designed and built rifle; thats why I posted the picture.

Saffron from Republica (remember them - probably not!) isn't too shabby either...
