Finally... Pictures of my Room

Posted by: Mike Hanson on 04 July 2002

Well I've been promising this forever, and I finally allocated a spare moment to do it. Here are a few pics of my listening space. If you remember, it's quite small (8x12 feet), with a 4x2' closet cutting into one corner. There's also a bay window, so you would think it should sound awful. Amazingly enough, it's actually quite wonderful. It does have French doors behind the chair, though, so in a way this room is sort of 8x50 feet. Curiously, it doesn't sound much different with the doors closed.

Let's start with the view from my chair:

Here are the Albions, in all their glory. Although it's hard to see in this picture, the speakers are sitting on custom platforms that do a great job of keeping the bass out of the floor. They look at bit like Mana at first glance, but they're using ball bearings rather than spikes. (It's nicer on the floor, and still does the trick.)

Note the bay window behind the speakers. At higher volumes the reflection off the glass can be a touch shrill, which is relieved by closing the blinds. I prefer them open, though, so that I can appreciate the view of the trees and ravine in my back yard. (It's not all about music, you know! wink)

BTW, that fellow standing beween the speakers is "Vuk Naked, Nuts Only Finger Tight".

Here's a shot in the other direction. You can really get a sense of how small the room is, especially with the closet there. However that closet does enable me to hide my ugly Mana. roll eyes The CDS2 is on the top of the rack, so it's very easy to change CDs without leaving my chair. I built that shelf, and it holds about 500 CDs. Finally, that's "Ferrous" sitting in one of his favorite spots.

This is the rack that sits directly beside my chair. It's a CDS2, 52, and Creek T43 tuner, along with three Mana Sound Stages, a 3-tier amp rack, and a Sound Frame on top (i.e. phases 5/4/4)

Here's the other rack, holding the Rega P3/DX4mk2, XPS, Super-Cap, and two 135s, all held up by two Sound Stages, a 5-tier amp rack, and another Sound Frame (i.e. phases 4/3/3/3/3).

A fellow in another thread was asking about CD storage. Here's where I keep the bulk of my CDs. You're looking at two 3-drawer units here. (They stack quite nicely.) I paid about $300US for each cabinet. The manufacturer is here in Toronto, so I didn't get killed by the shipping costs.

BTW, that's Ferris's brother Cosmo. No, he wasn't named after that guy in Seinfeld. Both cats are named after undesirable acquaintances. Ferris was a former boyfriend of my wife, and Cosmo was a really awful customer of mine. (I have no idea why we chose that naming methodology.)

Here's another shot with a drawer open. As you can see, it holds LOTS of CDs, and also works well for video tapes, DVDs, etc.

So there you have it. A little view of "Chez Catch". wink

Does the wooden guy help when you listen to the Nutcracker suite?

Is that an Ear phono stage above the Nutcracker guy?

And, finally, pictures of Dev's system (note the LP12 on Mana sneaking into the left hand part of the shot), otherwise, disturbingly Ikea like frown

Thanks Steve for that.

It's kinda weird seing a piccy of it because in real life the room is bigger than it seems in the piccy (the room is 15' x 13' and is on a galleried level).

Enough with the pictures already! My visa card couldn't afford the strain [eek]

Easy tiger!! - you're assuming these guys actually own all this kit and don't just have it on 'home audition' from their friendly local Naim dealer

Khoi asked:

But why do you have statues on the speakers ? I think they might resonate and you might want to remove them... ?

Believe me... if they affected the sound, then they wouldn't be there. The Albion's enclosure is remarkably inert, and the statues seem to have no impact on the sound. I've also tried the Totem Beaks, and they didn't have any impact. However, the Beaks improve the focus with the Royd Merlins in my upstairs office.

In case you didn't notice, I have a penchant for odd statues and such. In this case, it's a symbolic ear, in case the speakers didn't make the room's purpose quite clear. smile I'm also happy with my "Exit" light fixture in the bay window; the room is a perfect escape for me.

Apart from the lit up balance and volume the pre looks just like the 102, did the 52 also have one set of buttons, I have only ever seen it with two sets?

Or am I being stupid?

here's my new pride and joy, just to really stretch the old band width!

If you turn up the brightness of your monitor you'll see that there are two sets, although only one set seems to have visible labels. Perhaps the lower set only lights up when in use?

BTW Your LP12 looks great!

The top row controls the source, and it has everything in non-lit white letters. When the source is selected, it lights up in bright-green.

The bottom row doesn't have any non-lit letters (as they would be the same as the top row). When a button is selected, though, the letters for that button light up in red.

In contrast, it looks like Dev's 52 has green buttons on both rows. I guess the red wasn't bright enough to appear in my picture.

BTW, my 52 is about a year old. It's actually the only Naim component that I purchased "new". The CDS2/XPS was an ex-demo, and the rest was used.

Is it me or does your Mana pile have smoked glass?

One day all Mana users should have a comp for "dustiest system".

PS Really nice room Dev - I admire your minimilism.

Bub, it is not something I am adverse to honestly. Thing is the room looks really cool now and I just can't see where I could put it without purchasing a 7 teir mana rack, which frankly I don't have the money for, so in essence game over.

I am told reliably that these decks fair well on a lighter support of which the ash is not, but it sounds fantastic to me right now and that is all that matters.

this is straight from the source code.

and so on and on. whenever you find this: <IMG]http://www.avzine.com/images/system-speakers.jpg[/IMG] . that's a picture. my html is better than my french and as far as i can tell from the source code you just plainly insert an image-comand, which is to be found in those handy instant ubbcode, into the text whenever you want a picture. hope this helps.

oooops. just wanted to show something and went further than intended. you can learn from this. even simple copying of basic html can bring results. even those not intended. i just will cut that short to two images.
hi mike. nice room with a view you have there but a rather peculiar website. boys doing naughty things to speakers and remote controls.

One other thing that you must do is upload those pictures to your own repository on the web. In my case, it's one of my own sites. Some people using www.photo.net, etc. Then your <img>url</img> links (use square brackets [] instead of <> ) refer to the remote location of the images.

Never mind that disgusting statue (are you seriously saying that you sit and stare at that THING whilst you're listening!?? ) Just what the hell IS that hanging from the cupboard ceiling?

I know what I think it looks like but I'm just too shocked to say.....

Nice room otherwise though
