2 questions about the naim cd5.

Posted by: silklee on 16 May 2002

I just got a used naim cd5.... 2 things puzzle me.
(1) the fast forwarding doesnt seem to be continous. it FF for like 3 seconds, then 1 second then 3 and so on and so forth. is that normal? and it seems to stop FF after like a minute of fast forwarding.

(2) at the underside of the cdp, near the back centre, there is a 'screw'. what is that for? should leave it there or remove it? (I am not referring to the one that is used to hold the transport in place.)

Please help.

Hi,

If the screw is the same style as the one used to hold the transport it should be removed (as per instructions in the manual).

It locks the compliantly mounted main PCB in place for transport.

The ramped forward and reverse skip speeds are intended behaviour, this is common to most CDP's I've used.

Hi Andrew, the screw is the same style as that which is used to hold the transport.

I think i probably missed it but couldnt find anything about the screw in the user manual.

Thanks for your reply.

Somehow it seems to me that not many people uses the naim CD5 (or any naim CDP for that matter) with tube amplification.

as mentioned earlier, i just got myself a naim CD5. the rest of my chain is

Sonic frontier SFL-2
Audion Sterling stereo
and KEF cresta2

many people tell me the cresta2 is a total mismatch buti really like my setup quite a lot. and i am reading the thread about 'source first' with much interest.

anyone here also uses naim CDP with tube amplification? care to share your experience?

Joolz,

let me tell you my hifi journey so far and how i ended up with this odd setup.

I first started with a simple setup....

marantz PM4000
marantz CD5000
DPA little bit DAC
and the KEF cresta2

the first upgrade was the audion sterling stereo. its basically a power amp with a volume control and since i only had one source it worked for me fine. Obvious improvement was the vocals. Warm, sweet, lack punch... basically what EL34s can provide.

then came the sonic frontier. My friend was letting it go for cheap (about half the price of what my country's second dealers are selling it for). He let me tried it at home. Loved it. Transparent, fast, good soundstaging though not particularly warm.

And in the mean time, i was thinking of going single box for my source as I am rather short of space in my room. I auditioned the Naim CD5 on 3 occasions when my friends were looking for a CDP. Obviously I was more hooked to the CDP than they all were. Loved its sound, its looks, and even the puck. But the price for a new one was out of my budget so I just kept it in mind.

Then this used CD5 came along. So I got it.

I basically listen to a lot of pop and vocals, a little bit of jazz and no classical.

I do like the way my setup plays music. I dont know how i should define musicality but it sounds fine to me.

btw, how much is a hicap retailing in UK?

Someone in my country, Singapore, is selling it for S$1k which is about 360 pounds.

My friend who got himself a used CD3 and I (who just got the naim CD5) is contemplating getting it.

But he seems to have done some research which seems to say that the hicap do not work so well on the CD3. Any truth in that?

Price seems about right (slightly high for a black one, lowish for a green one) -- you'll never regret buying a used HiCap.

Make sure you get a SNAIC of some sort with it to run with the CD5.

Best;

Mark

If i'm not wrong, you can't use a cap with CD3.

I use a CD3.5 into an Audio Note Oto and Triangle Titus XS's. The amps and speakers replaced 32.5/SNAPS2/140 & Credos.

The setup works well.

hi.

what do you all mean when you say that the hicap cannot be used with the cd3? does it mean that there is no effect whatsoever or that the 2 of them cant even be connected together.

Sorry that some of my questions might seem very naive, but i am very new to naim. frown

The CD3 cannot connected to an external power supply. The CD3.5 and CD5 can.

My apologies.
