Nuno is this Portuguese chap I met on MSN back in October 2001.
His English can best be described as of Intermediate Level but getting better for all the time he lurks and posts on the various fora.
I still speak to Nuno from time to time on MSN as I find him to be a very pleasant chap. He started out on HFC forum, but moved over to Naim having got a nudge in the right direction from Yours Truly.
Even on MSN, he spelt "system" as "sistem." As a former EFL teacher I felt that it would be appropriate for me to correct his spelling of this oft-used word in these quarters.
Alas, it was too late as he had already started a cult. Ironically, he became the only regular forum member to spell the word "sistem" with a Y.
I now think it is time to advise those who compile the OED that the word sistem can also be spelt "system."
Regards,
Steve.

"Sistem" started as a tribute to Nuño, who distinguished himself with posting something like 250 queries before purchasing a CD5 -- like a latter-day Ulysses spurning the charms of Mrs Seagull and her doggies just to be able to post more obvious questions about this fairly elemental purchase.
It was a wonderful, heady time on the forum. enlivened also by Nuño's liberal use of the exclamation mark (standing in for any other kind of punctuation) and of course the delicious sign-off line:
"My sistem: mid-fi cdplayer, nait 5, dunno what kind of speakers, NACA5."
Personally I especially liked Nuño's non-query posts. He was particularly helpful if there was a query about the recommended length of NACA5 -- indicating that Nuño wasn't just a question guy. He was also a man with answers.
Unfortunately the eventual purchase of the cd player changed all this. The queries were (mostly) gone, and even worse, the spelling got regular, just as the entire forum was changing over to "sistem" (the moderators even worked overtime for a couple of weekends on retrograde re-spelling of the old forum, as a tribute to their Portuguese cash cow).
Nonetheless, since the summer of 2002 the word "sistem" denotes a hifi sistem, prefarably consisting of Naim products. It's been spilling over into other hifi forums. Pretty soon millions of Chinese schoolkids will learn the difference between "system" and "sistem" in their elemental English classes. Old spelling "system" is about, say, a political system or any other irrelevant real-world kind of system.
So just get with the program, Mike! No one says "system" anymore -- except, alas, Nuño!

I was not aware this thread was about you and your alledged seperate identity, Steve. And, if you ask me, there's less and less evidence for your being you.
In fact your bringing this up in a thread about Nuño and sistem is more proof you're not yourself, as this is another Stallion habit: "never mind the current topic -- let's talk about me".

I risk repetition but fear Nuno may not be remebered for his most glorious bon mot.
During a heated debate about mods and mains Nuno talked with real authority about the prospect of 'Naim Amplifires'.

You really think so? Going to Jùpiter would harm his sistem synergy!

I guess I got a little sentimental and dug up some old Nuño threads, running smash bang into another favorite Nuño word: source, as in cdplayer.
I'll copy a couple of posts, to give newbies a chance to savour life as it used to be.
And also I'd like to point out the wonderful line in the middle post "maybe one more time ST is right". I was wondering for a while what the hell ST could be, given the chance of some typo or Nuño spelling - then it dawned upon me ST is a person. So lo and behold, this is probably the one and only time ever in forum history someone said Steven Toy was right! (Well, "maybe.")
So here's some old authentic Nuño material:
"Before I can afford for a new Nai cd 5 source, I've got the cvhance to buy a Rega Planet second hand! As I´ve got a Naim Nait 5 amplifier this source will work fine or it will lacks dynaMIC? my dealer told me to listen Rega source maybe it works fine!anyone has got a Planet source and can give your opinion? Is it so good as some people say or to work with a Naim amplifier doesn´t work at all?"
"Ok Guys:
Thank you for your feedback! It was useful for me this argument, but maybe one more time ST is rigth! The minimun source that goes with this amplifier is a jùpiter! It´s better for me waith and save my money!I will hear a Naim cd 5 to listen the sinergies!I will take some notes to this forun, after!"
"Thank you guys for your feedback! That´s why I like the foruns!First of all I will listen A CD 5, just then I can think save my money to buy one!Let´s see what my ears listen...If I like it maybe it´s the better option, as Planet can be a not safe options a few months in future!Well I wish that CD5 can give me pleasure enougth to start save for replace my NAD!"

How very English. Not wishing to offend someone by pointing out an error. I am minded to believe Andrew Thomas, though.
Reminds me of the reason that Spanish is spoken with an affected lisp. It was because an early King ( sorry do not know the noun - Infanta? ) had a lisp which his Court adopted to save embarrasment.
Thanks to all
Mike

No need to take it so seriously Mike - I have genuine affection for Nuno and have conversed on many occasions with him.

How very English. My girlfriend is Spanish, and would be interested to hear all Spanish ('nother can of worms) speak with an 'affected lisp'. It's particularly rich coming from an English speaker, English being one of those languages that seem to have very little connection between orthography and prononciation.

PS Jay my 'sinergy' blooper just goes to show I have a long way to go yet.

Herm,
Shouldn't that be "orthugraphy and prononciation"? You've been having too many lapses lately ... ;-)

He's been spotted in The Music Room a couple of times recently.
I liked (like) Nuno, he was an island of civility and politeness amid all the carnage that was going on around him (Stand wars, name calling and member banning was at its height).

Stop pretending to see offense where there is none. And stop misquoting for dramatic effect . I have not referred toall Spanish, but Spanish. Ask your Spanish girlfriend to pronounce "Cerveca" and if you cannot hear two "th" sounds, you have wasted a great deal of money on hifi. Ask her, and tell us what she says. As she probably does not actually have a lisp, it is affected.
What does being an English speaker have to do with knowing something?
Mike
Posted on: 28 January 2003 by syd
Actually the spanish use "th" instead of "s" does'nt cover all of Spain. I've a mate who lives and teaches English in Cordoba and before I first visited I practised my best "doth thervetha por favor" only to find that the native Cordobans can handle S with aplomb. Cordoba is in the south about 100 mls north of Malaga and a lot of the Spaniards in the southern resorts come from the more northerly parts. Thats why you hear the "th" so much on holiday.

quote:Alex,
I thought that the use of 'th' instead of 's' was prevalent in the Catalan region, and was a dialect.
Catalan is actually a language. In Catalan, the 'c' is always pronounced 's'. Sometimes (i.e. a 'ç' before a voiced consonant) it might be pronounced slightly like 'z', but never 'th'. Oh no.
Cheers,
Edo
