AV2 mode selection problem
Posted by: Peter Gear on 27 February 2006
I'm having problems with my AV2 not selecting 5.1 dolby digital from DVD's.
I endeavour to select AUTO via the mode switch but it does not always appear to be present. I don't understand it.
I've tried to characterise the problem but it is difficult with differing results. Sometimes the AV2 indicates it's in AUTO and selects 5.1 correctly other times it doesn't. In these situations I can't even select AUTO via the mode button it just gives me mono or stereo.
Any thoughts? I'm getting a little fed up with this.
System DVD5/AV2/175 into 52/250 with SBL's/n sats/centre etc.
Cheers

Peter,
Probably it would be a good start to let us know the firmware release you are running on the AV2 and DVD5.

Will have to check this evening but its the latest as of July/August last year. My dealer loaded the latest versions on both DVD5 and AV2 at that time.
I really would like to just load any DVD press play and it to play 5.1. As I did with my old cheapo sony player.

Peter,
It does seem strange. I run a AV2/DVD5 combination and have no problems with the AV2 auto-selection of processing modes. I just leave the AV2 mode set to Auto and it picks it up every time for me.
Another thought, have you looked at your Coax cabling to check it's ok ? I had a problem once where the joints on my cable were coming loose and this caused processing issues for me.

I thought the AUTO mode option disappeared once a 2.0 Dolby Digital signal is locked onto...IIRC, once the program material switches from 2.0 (menu) to 3/2.1 (video titleset, movie chapter), the display changes–but there's no need to change the mode to AUTO at this point.

Thanks I will check the coax tonight to see if there is a problem there.
David
The problem I face is that it often wont come out of 2.0 (menu) when the film starts. I then go looking via the mode button to select auto to force it into 3/2.1 and can't find it. I'm only offered mono (1.0) or stereo (2.0 and some other stuff which means nothing to me. Removing the disc and starting again sometimes finds AUTO but again not always.

Have you set the digital output on the DVD5 to multichannel?

I hope somebody knows the answer to this as I have the same problem.
I normally play the film and scroll through the sources until I am back at DVD and generally auto/3:2:1 is illuminated. Sometimes I have to scroll several times.
It is a little tedious.

Well I checked the coax and that output of the DVD5 was multichannel (it was).
I then spent over an hour simply starting and stopping a DVD (also ejecting/loading) to try and characterise what was happening.
To cut a long story short:-
About 80% of the time (on average - the effect was quite random) the AV2 processed and output the correct 3/2.1. When correct the OSD status bar read 3/2.1 and scrolling the mode button gave mono, stereo and auto options.
However the other 20% of the time the AV2 did NOT process correctly and the OSD status bar would either read 2.0 or PL11 Movie. In this case scrolling the mode button would give mono, stereo, PL11 music, PL11 movie, NEO6 Cinema, NEO6 music, Auto. Selecting auto then gave 2.0!!
This was entirely random, I could go 8 -10 times with the AV2 processing correctly then maybe 2-3 time when it did not. This with different discs.
My AV2 is definitely not working as it should. My dealer is on the case and I trust there is a rapid solution. I'm not too happy at present.

Roy,
I asked Tom this on SUnday, and the answer was negative.. It's 'someone from the av dept'!

Did he suggest a time period when the next AV2/DVD5 firmware releases may be available at all ?
Roy.
someone from the AV dept....hmmmm. Alex ?
