CD5+112+FC2+250+Intro2 what next?

Posted by: Stan on 21 January 2004

Hi All,

Thanks to all the advice - a new 250 is on its way to me.

Where do i go next?

282 to replace 112

or

CDX2 to replace CD5

I know source first is the 'rule of thumb', but what i'd like to know is

1. Will the 112 get more out of the CDX2 or
2. Will 282 show more of the CD5.

My objective is to get to CDX2+282+hi+250+SL2, so both the CDX2 and 282 are on my mind. I'd just like to get the most of the components i have till i get there.

The route i am considering at the moment is
Buy 282 - trade in 112 (year old)
Buy hi cap for 282, use FC2 on CD5
Buy CDX2 (think of XPS Wink - can i use FC2 on 282 and CDX??)
Buy Fraim

I know these are a lot of questions. Thanks in advance for all replies.

Regards,
Stan

Hi Kid,

Well now i'm back to square one. I started this topic because i wanted to know if i should buy the 282 before the CDX2.

Hicap is a given, i will buy it next.

As mentioned earlier i do not have the luxury of demoing. There is only one dealer here and he does not have anything other than the 5 series to demo.

What do the others think? 282 or CDX2?

Most people seemed to favor the CDX2 over the 282. And i can imagine it must not a simple X or Y decision.

Thanks,
stan

hi stan, I am in a similar yet a bit different situation than yours. I am using CD5/FC2/202/200/Allae. The sistem is around 7 months old. The upgrade bugs bite 2 months ago and so I have put my CD5/FC2 on the 2nd hand market before I go out to make any audition. The effect on a CDX2 on a 112/150/ Intro2 combo is SO much better than a CD5/FC2 that me and my friend left the shop with our jaws dropping. Trust me, source first is so true.

I went from CD5/Hicap to CDX2 and it was a significant jump for me along with my 200/202....You can now get a 2nd hand CDX2 for around £2,000 which makes it the same price as a new CD5 and Hi-Cap!.....

stan-

my $.02: get the cdx2.
i briefly had a cd5/fc/202/250 while i waited for my cdx2 to arrive. it was an incredible improvement in all areas.

four weeks later i upgraded to a 282. while i also felt that it was a great move, i believe that the cdx2 makes the system have larger "presence" and weight while the 282 refines the total picture.

i drive dynaudio special 25s with spectacular results.

have fun....ian

Stan,

My experience with those two is that bare CDX2 adds more depth and midrange presence than 282.

282 is a good preamp, but the way it handles projection is reticent than CDX2.

Part of the new Naim attraction, to me , is that they add immediacy and here-ness to an overall presentation. Even a bare CDX2 offers that more so than 282. ( you get that with 252 )

It is interesting to see how Naim 'holds' off certain sonic virtues untill you get to a certain level and it is like a clock-work.

Andy-No second hand market here.

Ian and Kuma - Great posts helped me almost visualize and imagine the differences between the CDX2 and 282. Kuma, don't get me thinking about the 252 Wink

Hi,
B4 my latest round of upgrades my system was: CD3.5-Hicap-102-flatcap(NAPSC)-180-sbl's.

After extensive home demo's etc I went CDX2, then XPS2 and 282 at the same time.

I tried the XPS2 onto the CDX2 thru the 102 and the improvements were slight. Plugging a 282 in place of the 102 being fed by a bare CDX2 was far more of a jump. Then re-introducing the XPS2 showed this units capability.
Next for me is probably a fack upgrade of some kind due to lack of space, folowed by either the supercap or 250.

hope this helps..

Hi all,

Just placed the order for the CDX2 and the Hi-cap. Just wanted to hold out till the 250 had settled in. After almost a month it has.

The 5th to 20th days were absolutely terrible, i totally regretted trading in my 150, but thanks to the forum held on, and its beginning to payoff.

Now once the new stuff arrives have to go through it all again Frown

Next stop, 282 and Fraim.

Had a query,

1. Does all equipment benefit from Fraim? Or is it just the CDP and Pre.

2. Should i buy the Fraim with the extended spacers or just the normal spacers. My equipments consists of CDX2+112+hi+250+intro2, and do not intend to go beyond the 282.

2. Do the chips make a difference even if my speakers are placed on a carpeted floor?

As always, much appreciate all the advice. Thanks.

Stan
