"Classic" versus "Reference"

Think it would be less ambiguous if we called the new range 'the 21st Century range'. I know it is just approximate but 'the 1990s range' and 'the pre-1990s range' would describe adequately what we are talking about.

Can Naim comment on this? Isn't reference now the 'official' name?

My understanding of the word classic, is like old stuff which never lost its edge or what ever.

Its like calling a brand new album a classic, not really fair to the true classics such as Shawadywady etc.

indeed 'reference' seems a more accurate characterization, i contend the new gear is the antithesis of 'classic'..

I've been interested in all your replies and comments and in the results of the poll so far. Most of you prefer Reference. I'd also like to get confirmation from Naim on what the series is really called. Please continue voting and thanks.

Gary,

If your comment is about PS's statement...

"Black Classic" came *before* Chrome Bumpers.

cheers, Martin

In the recent Naim full-line catalogue it's called Reference series.

Classic? Wouldn't want that confused with linn's little all-in-one-box products now, would we?

Oh yea, I get it now!

FWIW, I'd go with the Highlander "there can be only one" philosophy re "Reference" - a much abused word methinks. It implies the standard by which all others are judged, which may well apply to the 5xx kit, but surely it can't all be the best, can it?

Next in line was going to be "Tryptych", but:

a) It's hard to pronounce / spell etc, and of course
b) It fits the 5 series too (D'Oh!)

All of which leaves me getting nowhere fast. Actually, if we have a 5 Series, how about a "200" and a "500" Series, all used with Tryptych to cover the new style? OK, I know some of the model numbers conflict, but you wouldn't want life to be too perfect would you?

Alex

Fair point, & I suppose "three part front" wouldn't really cut the mustard with Naim's marketing types...

As the guy that introduced the (mis)spelling here, I guess I could claim that I was deliberately linking the "three" concept from Triptych with the dark "Crypt-like" colour of the new boxes, but that really would be lame Frown Think anyone might buy it?
