Important Servicing Announcement
Posted by: Richard Dane on 20 January 2004
Yesterday we heard the unfortunate news that one of our Capacitor suppliers has ceased trading and cannot fulfill our most recent order. We have enough stocks for a few more months but until a suitable replacement can be found that performs to a similar (or maybe even better...?) standard, we are going to have to put a short temporary moratorium on re-capping work for power supplies and power amps. We would kindly ask that no more of these items be sent to us for re-capping for the time being as we will not be able to do anything with them until a replacement supplier is found.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and rest assured R&D are working hard listening to all the alternatives so hopefully it won't be long before things are back to normal.

Can you tell us how the search is going and any idea how much longer before a new candidate is selected?

We are down to a shortlist for further listening tests although there are a couple we are still awaiting samples. That's all\the progress I can report so far.

So...you've been doing listening tests eh?.. How do they stack up so far against the old ones? Are they better?

Richard Dane - "As for re-sleeving Olive kit with "Chrome bumper" cases, sorry, no, it's not possible"
Yes BUT can I return my 1988 Nap 90 -which has had its sleeve changed to Olive Type- (hence slight gap at top of fascia!) BACK to a Chrome Bunmper sleeve- if so you must presumably have stocks of these from the swaps!??
Don Atkinson -"...errrrr....allow me to intoduce you to an angle-grinder........
I bet that would expose a bright shinney "chrome bumper"......"
Look carefully, the olive sleeves are thinner & slightly different size!

What caps are being used to make the new amps and power supplies at the factory? Or are these items unavailable new at the moment?
Posted on: 31 March 2004 by Rich Jerskey
....good question.....Maybe production is at a standstill? or is there a reserve dedicated to new components.....?
Oh Yea......

On the asumption that an exact match for the old cap is very unlikely, but that a better new cap may be found, it would make more sonic sense to keep the old cap supply for the old gear to enable matching (eg. one amp of a 135 six-pack). The new better caps could be put in the new "better" amps without matching problems in the future.
This, of course, would not make financial sense.

But what would they use now for new manufacture, as it seems to me you are suggesting that Naim just stop building new amps and PSUs. Naim would go out of business sharpish if they did that. They don't appear to have found a suitable replacement yet.

True, and I'm impressed that Naim have even told us of this problem. Many manufacturers would have stuck any in old caps in the interim and kept quiet.

now don't go and give them any ideas!

Any update from Naim?
How near are Naim to finding a suitable replacement?
Anyone from Naim care to comment?

It's a good point though, isn't it! Imagine a manufacturer telling its buying public that they have a problem with supply of components. It is astonishing really.
I suppose the whole thing with Naim is that music (and the reproduction of) is a personal thing, so they provide what must be the most personal service that any manufacturer could possibly provide...well, probably even beyond that.
Maybe there is equipment that performs better for the money very occasionally, but you can't buy into this elsewhere.
I'm a lifer now, on principle.

Hi all,
we are down to a shortlist of candidates although we are STILL awaiting some samples from a few suppliers....
More extensive listening tests are imminent. Sorry everyone, we know it's annoying but these things just can't be rushed. The decision we make MUST be the right one.

Are you sure that suppliers who can't even manage to send samples will be reliable when you buy in volume?
Take your time. I'm sure you'll find something eventually. I'll hold off recapping my second Hicap till then.

Well, the wait is over, we're pleased to announce that we can lift the re-cap moratorium as of today. We have chosen a new capacitor supplier who will hopefully start supplying us within a month or two. However, thanks to careful shepherding of our on-hand stocks we are able to resume re-capping straight away using what we have left of our existing stocks.
Obviously our service department is going to be put under some strain for the forseeable couple of months so we would advise anybody not aboslutely needing a service of their Naim equipment straight away to perhaps hang on just a little longer and wait until after our Summer shut-down. Service are currently quoting a 3 week turn-around but this may need to be revised upwards if we're suddenly inundated with units requiring re-capping.
Once again, thanks to all of you for being so patient and understanding during this testing period of time.
Richard
p.s. Please note that the cut-off date for guaranteeing the return of equipment from service before summer shut-down is Friday 18th June. Any equipment we receive after this date cannot be guaranteed that it'll be returned before we close for our break.

Richard,
Did you choose Siemens or Philips or BHC ?

Why such a limited choice....?

I thought Naim only changed things when something better was available?
Reassuring indeed. The more I hear about Naim methods the more I'm glad to be a customer.
Cheers Robert

Hooray my 250s will be home soon (and with the proper caps)

I got my 2nd hi-cap back this morning. It's been re-installed and is sounding lurvely (with new 'old' caps, tants and a nice black snaic).
Cheers,
Steve
