Just one of those moments I'll not forget

Well, there I was, enjoying myself in the wooded area near a major local river. We have very friendly wee birds known locally as fantails that follow people around in the bush, flitting very close - supposedly to catch the insects that the lumbering humans disturb. Anyway, this particular little fellow was getting very close so I started talking to him and picked up a stick about 2.5 feet long. I slowly held it out to him (her?), thinking that he might jump onto the stick. After a little bit of jumping from tree to tree, that's exactly what he did. He stayed there for a few seconds and let me move the stick around while he wobbled a bit on the end - there could be no doubt that he knew I was holding the other end. He flew off - but I came back to the area half an hour later and he turned up again and hopped onto my stick again - this time for a little longer.

The way I figure it, I made a conscious contact with a wild creature. I communicated to him that I wanted him to do something - and he understood and agreed to it.

Last year over the summer I managed to get a couple of wood pigeons to feed from my hand. Over a period of a month I allowed them to feed from seed thrown on the ground approx 20 m from me while just sitting watching. Over the period I gradually moved the food closer to me. Eventually, they would feed at my feet. It was a couple of days from there to get them to feed from my hand. Conclusion... I need to get out more

Every day I go out and feed the pigeons ....

... to my cat.*

*Note: this post is meant as humour and should not be taken to mean I would ever feed a pigeon to a cat.

I should hope you'd show more respect for cats than that.
