Hidden tracks...who wants them?
Posted by: Gary S. on 12 May 2007
Out of five CDs I bought yesterday, 4 of them have hidden tracks. Bloody anoying or what? The new Travis album "The boy with no name" has two, which are advertised on the front lable, but why bother? Why not just add the two tracks to the playlist. I don't want to sit and wait 10 minutes after the final listed track has finished to be suddenly confronted with a hidden track and I would like the option of being able to select all the tracks with the remote.

Yeah I agree. Have a disc where you have to go through about 3 minutes of inane rambling before you get the hidden track. What's the point.

Load of cobblers. Hidden tracks started out as a novelty. I can't remember hearing one which added anything positive.

The only hidden track that I've heard thats been any good was the Something in the Way by nirvana. This was originally a hidden track on dc only (obviously) but got such a response that the record company put as standard on future releases.
Other than that one the are usually dross and of no merit.

I hate hidden tracks, especially Something In The Way by Nirvana, 'cos if I'm relaxed or snoozing, it scares the living piss out of me!

There is an excellent hidden track on one of the coral albums (the first album i think or the second).
They do seem to be on a lot of albums nowadays.

Lol, but Heath at least its a good track, and if you get a reissue then its just the last track.
I remember seeing an interview with an artist (can't remember who though)who said its a way of doing something fresh and original.....which is bollocks as everyone is doing it and have been for years.
The Shamen on their record Boss Drum put all their samples on at the end so you could use them and make up your own songs.......now that was original!!

That was actually one of the albums I bought on Friday and I get really anoyed that you can't select these hidden tracks, you just have to sit and wait for them....that's assuming you know they're there.

Ryan, Yep it's a good song, but it still gets me every time!
On the Shamen thing I have a triple vinyl of all the Progen remixes. Side six is given over to loops, samples etc to produce your own remix. The sleeve notes read "We're sick of remixing this f**ker - so here are the bits - go do it yourself" Nice one, sorted, as they (I) used to say

Aah! but what about the hidden tracks off the beginning of some CDs. We discussed this here years ago and found quite a few. You have to play track 1 and use the rewind button to go backwards off the beginning of the CD. David Gray's 'White Ladder' was the one I found by accident.

Calexico Feast of Wire also.
As regards these hidden tracks it's not a problem for me. Just go to next track or FF to the start. It pre-supposes you know they are there. My CDP usually tels me there is more to come.

If anyone has it, System Of a Down's toxicity has some wierd tribal type track hidden at the end- just a load of strange flute instruments/drums and chanting. It actually sounds pretty kickass in the hifi too.

It is a good track though Gary S. Just push fast forward if you can't be patient

One of the few recent-ish albums I bought on Vinyl. Damn, no hidden tracks on the old black wax. Although I read somewhere that some of the Monty Python LPs had hidden stuff in different run-in grooves.

One of the MPFC albums can't remember which though, had 3 "sides" ie the second side had 2 grooves on it.
