Thinking of buying but.....

Posted by: KeanoKing on 03 April 2010

There are many times when i think of buying a record (CD or vinyl) and due to expense or possible sound quality issues i stop myself. So i thought it would be a good idea (good because i thought of it) to post an album i'm / anyone is thinking of buying, to see if anyone has any thoughts on it... Either to endorse or reject, or to suggest better pressings. So fisrt up for me is the new Donny Hathaway Comp. Love Donny but this is expensive for me.. so would like to know if anyone has purchased this already and thinks it's essential

PS-Why are people called Brian more musical..?

I think Donny's Someday We'll All Be Free is one of the greatest songs ever written. Genius. The vamp at the end alone is amazing ... really advanced rhythmic and harmonic stuff, and soulful, emotive, and infectious as well. Quite an achievement.

I don't have this one but have some of her others. Not too sure really.

Anyway, if you subscribe to the rather wonderful Jazzwise magazine, which with your interest in jazz you should be reading, they will send it to you as a gift.

The booklet is in French and it is a limited edition that is selling very fast. I have read a couple of comments that the sound quality is supposed to be good. Personally I have always thought that the original discs always sounded vg.

There are 5 unreleased tracks and 2 unreleased live tracks on it.

In fact it seems to now be unavailable on Amazon UK but still available on their French site.

I've got it. I'll have to have a listen again as I have played it just the once. I am not really a big Sinatra fan. I must have been feeling rich that afternoon I bought it.

I have the two that came out on CD and would love to get my hands on this one if they would have just issued it on CD as well. Frown

This is a comment on another forum re this MFSL album.

"My guess is this was a twin track recording. Band in left channel, Frank in right channel. But there was significant instrumental leakage in the vocal mic (right channel).

The two channels were then closely panned towards the center of the image for both the 1994 CD and Lp master, but not quite summed to mono.

So what we are hearing on the Lp are very closely blended twin track channels with minor phasing artifacts caused by the instrumental leakage in the vocal channel, hence the slight stereo separation, which some incorrectly assumed was fake stereo processing.

Mystery solved. This Lp is technically "stereo" but really just two closely blended twin tracks creating a "quasi-stereo" effect.

I actually think the mono-ized version you summed sounds best."

To put it in context MFSL did not use the origianl mono master tapes they used the fake stereo tapes of the 1994 version.

There is another better sounding hard to get version of the same concert out there. Link below

Well, I could bring mine up to yours, and run it off a laptop.

Easy enough for me to do.

I've not heard it but if you go and look in this month's Jazzwise (did you subscribe?) there is a 4 star review which means they think it is excellent.

Hi-Fi News and Record Review just gave it an excellent review and their "Album Choice". It says "Savour it like no other live album you'll ever own"
