Reliability of HDMI connection

Posted by: PatG on 07 March 2006

This question relates to peoples experience of HDMI connections.

I have connected my DVD5 to a SIM2 20H projector using different HDMI cables.

Using one 10m HDMI cable, the image is fine but the picture drops out for approx 5 minutes at fairly regular intervale (every 20-30 minutes). Obviously this is an unsustainable situation.

Using a shorter HDMI cable from a different manufacturer, there is no break in image buy I notice some occasional colour flickering (very subtle on the whites and creams)

Anyone any experience of this?

Thanks & regards P

Are you using an adaptor, or a DVI-HDMI cable?

Hi.
I have the same setup as you and use a 15m wireworld ultraviolet cable and the only time i get a drop out is if i turn the dvd5 on before the sim2 ,which is a bit strange.
I also have a Arcam dv79 with a Pioneer plasma and the slightest movement on the hdmi cable at the Arcam end and it will drop out very quickly.

Cheers

No picture drop out for HDMI cable of 2 m (my set up).

Even if your display has HDMI connection, you must keep in mind the feeder is the DVD5' DVI output. DVI specs forbid a cable longer than 5m (IIRC) so what you are experiencing is ''normal''.
A few companies are now offering boosters or special cables for longer runs. I know Runco has a signal enhancer called ''Live-Link'' it is garanted for 25m. They should now have licenced it to cables manufacturers.

Yep, sounds like a booster is needed. Our 32 metre HDMI cable has no "1"'s or "0"s dripping out unless a booster is used.

Thanks for replies.

I am using a DVI to HDMI cable.

Where are these boosters sold?

some of the common ones:

http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/EXT-HDMI-141.htm

try googling "dvi booster" or "HDMI booster"

can be pricey depending on quality

Check the spec's first. I don't want to be blamed for the purchase of a incompatable product... Big Grin
