BR player to AV2 analog input : what cables ?

Posted by: karyboue on 09 May 2008

Hi everybody,

I am about to go Full HD by june, buying very probably the new Pioneer plasma and a Blu-Ray player.

I need to connect the BR player to the AV2, but how to ?
Would a pair of 4RCA-5pin DIN Chord Crimson do it ?
Is there some Naim Cables ?

I just phoned flashback cables and told him what I wanted to do and he made them all up no problems.

Thanks.

I've been reading about BR players and it is quite complex.
From what I have understood to get the best out of the analog output we need a BR player able to decode DTS HD MASTER ... but I can't find one ???

I think you'll have to wait until this one becomes available here:

Panasonic DMP-BD50

It will be (one of) the first standalone player with bd-live (profile 2.0) and to be capable of native bitstream output of both hd-audio formats (or decoding it internally and outputting LPCM, as some others can now). Both needs HDMI, native even HDMI v1.3.

Analogue outputs? Some have none, some bigger models have 5.1, don't know if 7.1 even exists? But this doesn't seem to be the preferred way, only as "fallback" solution when you can't use digital outputs I guess...

Probably a naim bd-player will have quality analogue outputs Roll Eyes But then you will have to wait even longer and have deeper pockets Razz

You may find additional info in those two threads:

Thanks,

I think that I might buy the panasonic before one Naim BR player is out ... one day, when the DVD upscaling card is ready ... Confused

Reading the other topic about the analog output, you're damn right I'll have to figure out first whether the Bluray player has speaker setup to use with the AV2 analog inputs.
(I've downloaded the "old" BD30's manual and it has a full speaker set-up menu)

Don't you think that the player's Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master decoding analogicaly sent to the AV2 can only be better than a downscaled Dolby or DTS digitaly sent to the AV2 ? I mean the original HD bit-rates are 24,5 mbps max. for HD Master and 6 mbps max. for HD not Master compared to the 1,5 mbps DTS core (by the way isn't the core Dolby 384kps only ?)

I have found this link about every zone A and B BR Players : http://www.blu-ray.com/players/compare.php

That one was not nice Razz (but true!)

Analogue outputs: Yes, you are right. The number of plugs (=channels) is one thing. A full setup in the software another...

I think the max. rate of the Dolby Digital core is 640 kbps.

Of course counted by bitrates the new uncompressed HD audio formats should be better (when the rest of the system is good enough to let it through). Even over analogue when done right. But I don't know how good the D/A converters, analogue output stages, power supplies, ect. in those consumer electronics is. Probably not good enough to show a difference?

Since I have a PS3 as BD player without analogue multichannel outputs, and an AV2 without HDMI I can't test that myself. Would be interesting to do!

I have recently read a test about an Arcam Solo device in a german magazine. The developer claims that HDMI audio has much worse jitter than the "old style" digital connections. That's why they use HDMI for video only.
Obviously not plug'n'play at all when you want to do it right... Seems like a lot of things has to settle first, until we have real highend BD player.

This list is a good overview, thanks Winker

I am upset by that scaling card not only because I want my DVD5 to be upgraded but because it needs to be sent to Naim for a repair. Since it has been "thunderbolted" a year ago, I have no more BNCs, no more analog audio on Din and cinchs, the only available outputs are scart (with stripes) and audio digital.
Estimate has been done (3/4 of the DVD5's original price) and my insurrances is ok to pay, they already send me half of the estimate.
But I wanted to wait for the availability of the upscaling card before I send it to Naim to have it not only repaired but upgraded at the factory and I know a Naim repair can be very long : 3 months to repair and send back my AV2 for a firmware problem 2 years ago.
Now, I am fed up waiting and I will send my DVD5 at Naim when I get the BD50 ... then I get a high end BR player when it is available, possibly a Naim one.

About the HDMI output, isn't it the only way to transfer digital high rates, coaxial and optical outputs have limits, haven't they ?
