Desperately seeking new music
Posted by: Mitch_USA on 12 March 2006
I have a fantastic NAIM system, but seem to be playng the same old stuff all the time. I'd love some suggestions on new music. What do I listen mostly to?
Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Bare Naked Ladies, Patty Griffen, James Taylor, Tori Amos, Marc Cohn, Crowded House, Al Jarreau, Annie Lennox, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Rickie Lee Jones.
All great stuff, but any new artists around with similar talent & styles?

Get Eric Clapton's "Me and Robert Johnson", Jorma Kaukonen's "Blue Country Heart", Jack Johnson's "In Between Dreams" and one or two from Eric Bibb. You'll like all this stuff, guaranteed. (against defects by the mfg.)

Yes, Rick ... I love the ladies.
Mitch, another great musician fitting your list but conspicuous in her omission is Joni Mitchell.

You could check out Belle and Sebastian.
I have "Tigermilk", "The Boy with the Arab Strap" and "The Life Pursuit" and like them all. There are others.

Given what you currently listen to, Fred's right on the money and I'd suggest the following albums as starting points....
Shawn Colvin - 'A Few Small Repairs'
Jonatha Brooke - '10c Wings'
Andrea Zonn - 'Love Goes On'
Alison Krauss - 'So Long So Wrong', 'Lonely Runs Both Ways', 'Forget About It' or 'New Favorite'
Can I also add
Lyle Lovett - 'Pontiac' or Lyle Lovett and his Large Band' are good starting points
Jerry Douglas - I really like his new one, 'The Best Kept Secret' but also listen to 'Slide Rule' or 'Lookout for Hope'
Johnny A - 'Sometime Tuesday Morning' or 'Get Inside'
and you might want to listen to both of Fred's albums, of course.

Have I misunderstood the word new ?
Great suggestions but bar one or two, hardly new

Is it "new", or "new to the listener" we are talking about here?
If its the latter, then FWIW,- Jellyfish, the honeydogs, owsley, beck, kd lang, athlete, elbow.
Just my opinion, hope you like 'em.
matt.

Some great suggestions here, thanks. Some I have heard of, but most are new. To answer the last question, I'm happy for any suggestion that is "new to me".

A few Albums that might do the trick.....
Jackson Browne, "Life Under the Sky" and "Running on Empty".
Shawn Colvin, "Live 88", "Fat City" or "A Few Small Repairs".
People have mentioned Richard Thompson - you might like to try a recent release by Teddy Thompson (Richard & Linda's son) "Separate Ways".
Kate Bush, "The Kick Inside", "The Sensual World", "Hounds of Love" or "Aerial".

Hi there Mitch,
I think you'd be better of with something completely out of your present line which is very near-mainstream singer/songwriter stuff.
Belle and Sebastian in their fist guise, with Isobel Campbell, could be a good start. Try Tigermilk or The Boy With The Arab Strap. The singing is rather 'nice', just like you're used to from your other records, but what they are singing about is not...
Maybe after that you feel confident enough to try some The Velvet Underground, John Coltrane, Tapper Zukie, Windy and Carl, Kraftwerk, Half Man Half Biscuit, Sonic Youth, Maria Callas, David Tudor...? If you have a nice system the whole musical spectrum is at your feet. Go out and grab?
Have fun!

Mitch - Try Ryan Adams; Gold, for starters. That'll lead you onto alt. country, and eventually you'll end up where you started, but richer. Don't be put off by the genre, it fits with your list.

What a great suggestion - I'd recommend Trouble Over Bridgwater as an introduction to the finest band in the world (IMHO, of course) - though whatever you choose it is all beyond reproach. HMHB are very English though.
If you want to try something other than HMHB that's a little different then I would recommend Anthems in Eden by Shirley & Dolly Collins which is a landmark elpee or 5000 Spirits by the Incredible String Band.

Thanks to everyone for some great suggestions. A few of these I haven't been able to find yet, but I've already bought a couple & am enjoying them.
Thanks again
