iTunes folder problem. Help please.

Hi All.

Recently got a G-Technology G-Drive Mini to hold my iTunes library. Copied the iTunes folder over from my G-Technology G-Drive (the Mini is self-powered by the Firewire connection whilst the other requires mains power). The powered drive is going to be used as a back up.

The problem is that when iTines is opened it requires the old drive (now the back up) to be on as it searches for that drive as holding the iTunes Library. I have gone to preferences and pointed iTunes to the new drive to no avail. I guess it has something to do with copying the iTunes folder over from the old drive.

What do I need to do to get iTunes to read from the new drive only? iTunes will not open without the old drive on.

Many thanks

Neil

Back up first! Then....

You need to re-import the library. Clear your whole iTunes library (select all the tracks in iTunes, and delete), then click "add to library" in the "File" list and browse to your new drive/folder that contains all the music. Make sure you have it set to neither move nor organise the files. It will take a few minutes to import everything.

Remote drives and iTunes are usually a PITA. You have been warned.

Thanks for the advice Winky. Realised my error! The alias I made of the iTunes folder (and placed in the music folder on the Mac Mini) was for the back up drive (the original music drive). Just made a new alias from the new drive and all is OK.

Cheers again

Probably not what you're after Neil, but I've just followed these instructions from Apple to back up my Eye Choons library to an external HD.

It worked a treat.

Thanks for the link JN. Will this automatically copy music to the back up drive as it is ripped to the music drive?

Happy holidays.

No just to your media file for iTunes, you can then back up to hard drive again( I am assuming you would over write the earlier backup file).
At least that is how I read it.

You are correct Howard. Any additions to one's library have to be manually added to the external HD. Unless of course you have an Apple 'Time Machine, which I believe backs up everything automatically.
