'Dance Music...whats your favourite?'

Hi,
Im into all sorts of the genre -particularly trance (Sasha, Bt, Air, etc). I've seen numerous entrys to this forum on classical and rock, but other than the Banco... thread below not too much on dance music (Which Naim kit plays really well by the way IMO).

So - whats your favourite and why?
You could be helping me expanf my horizions lol!

I have both Reason and fruity loops.
Fruity loops is for playing with, but reason is one serious pice of kit - I'm still trying to get to grips with it but the Roland synth within it is awesome. i do have a yamaha keyboard linked to my PC, and its good fun to say the least...
Also, just had delivered the Richard x presents his X factor Cd. Anyone into electroclash or sampling 80's stuff and bringing it uptodate should give it a try. Not for everyone tho...

My mate uses Cubase AV (well, he did in 1999 - the last time I played around with the software) and it seemed pretty good - can you do phasing/flanging/distortion/antiphasing (for wraparound sound)/pitchshifting in things like Fruityloops, or do you have to fiddle with all that in something like CoolEdit?

Damn - should have kept an eye out for Computer Music - I think my mate might subscribe so I'll ask him.

I knew the 808 was a drum machine - so I'm getting somewhere (I remember the bit in Eric B's Bad young brother with the "Like an 808 bass drum it sounds real good/the beat keeps dropping, the way it should" couplet Smile

Yes, Fruity Loops can flange and phase etc. - these are done by lug in modules, either interbal ones, or effects which can be added in from VST or DXi formats. There are oddles about.

It also has a rudimentary sampler built in, so pitch shifting is possible to. It is is a very goodsort of 'sketchpad' to get the overall idea of a tune sorted out, but you reaaly needed something like Reason or Cubase as a host sequencer to get into the real detail.

Reason is a self contained soft studio, and as such cannot contol extrnal synths and modules.

Cubase SX is a good sequencer - (Version 2 was annouced yesterday) it is expensive, but powerful, can included some reasonable VST instrumnets and effects. It can control external synths with sophisicated MIDI handling, internal VSTs and audio processing as well.

Hi,

This is a little gift for Nick Lees really, who's recommendations I have quietly been cockroaching for a while now. There was/is a band called Gong in the 70's, made up of European personnel, mainly English and French who I attribute to really crystalizing the seeds that became 'Dance' music, just the influences they imbibed and took forward. I digress a bit because this link is to System 7 and Steve Hillage was lead guitarist with Gong for some years and in particular with an LP called 'You' which is well worth checking out for its pothead pixies but also cause its dynamic, emotional, powerful and very danceable! anyway here's the link (WhirlyGig is also bonus info) enjoy:-

I have a Gatecrasher double CD which is a Red Face (whisper) copy. I have tried and tried to buy it, but it doesn't exist anymore, even on their web site. Its from '97ish. What a friend of mine calls hooligan music. I get confused about these labels, and Trance to me is 3 years ago dreadful 70's violin screech disco revival sttuff. So what do you call Chemical Bros? How would you describe Aphex Twin? I dunno. Confused But there is no way that Goldfrapp is dance. Its Shirley Bassey.

If anybody happens to own any of the new Ministry CD's Spring/Summer/ Annual?? Any of them. Listen to the Track that Charlotte Church sings on (Brave new world?!?). Sounds good. Try it, you may like it.

Just took delivery of the 'Latest' Deep Dish release, 'penetrate deeper', which is in fact a re-mix of the original which came out in 1995.
It's ok, especially if you like BT as some of his very early stuff is on this CD. Problem is there is nothing 'new' sounding, if you see what I mean.

I have seen a 12" release of the I Feel Love P. Cowley remix in both Fopp and HMW. It doesn't mention anything about D. Summer though.

I listen to a fair bit of dance music, some of which has already received mentions.

I would highly recommend Everything but the Girl (anything you can get your hands on, my latest one is the "very best of"). Great melodies, and very well recorded, some of the best sounding discs I have!

Hybrid have already received a mention, they're great - and they have a new one coming out at the end of the month - be sure to get your hands on it!

Underworld are also worth a mention, Beacoup fish is well worth getting.

Finally one of my favourites, Mint Royale. Their latest album is a lot more dancy, although to be honest I preferred their first, but both well worth buying.

I was asked to post an update when I purchased the latest Hybrid Cd...
No bad, but fairly hit and miss IMO. Production is 1st rate, as is the 'thanks to' list, but the music sometimes seems to lack direction.
The latest BT release is far better VFM IMO...

I'm not saying morning sci-fi is bad, just that it was not brilliant.
I do like it, and perhaps with more plays it will become a 'grower'

Coarrrrrrrrrrrr, a ‘normal’ music thread, as requested here are some of my favourites…

The Global Underground Series
Especially ANYTHING by Deep Dish, Paul Oakenfold, Nick Warren, the others are so, so….

NUBREED Series
I got a few of these the best being the Sander Kleinberg (?), along the same lines of Global Underground (well it is by them), but some well groovy tracks.

Gatecrasher Series
Got them all, varied but some excellent tunes, but a bit more hard core

John Fleming
His White Label series is superb, very cutting edge and so groovy and hardcore.

Euphoria Series
A lot for more hardcore, especially the Lisa Lashes Cd’s – not for the faint hearted

Laylo and Bushwacker
Nightworks – so cool excellent chill out stuff, the new release called another or something is weak

Hed Kandi
Got into these after buy three special purchase @ HMV, not too keen on the disco and winter mixes, but the Deeper and Ibiza Mixes are awesome all filled with sublimely silky vocals, the epitome of cool groove tunes – A MUST

Ministry of Sound and Cream
Overrated and usually very poorly mixed with some strangely short tracks

Naheed - I seem to have similar tastes to you. I have a very weird CD that Sasha did to promote the Wipeout Playstation game release, and although its probably not available anywhere (I found it in a bargain bin) it is seriously stonking.

Ahhh the bargain bin, is it the Wipe-out 2000 track (the spacey racer game), if so that's well groovy.

Just bought my first God's Kitchen CD (the latest one - can't recall the name), three cd's with progressively harder mixes, listened to it on the drive back from Yorkshire, BAD IDEA but I never got caught speeding Big Grin 1Big Grin3 Big Grin5

I also picked up the Lee Burridge - Global Underground release (it's in those awkward f**king shaped cases), have not listened to it yet, as the Gods kitchen cd has me hooked...

Oh forgot i also have the 24:7 Danny Howells, in this series, another beauty, well worth the purchase, with a few simply outstanding tracks

It's a sublime compilation - though the single disc mixed version is easier to "follow" if you see what I mean - oh, and it's mixed from vinyl so the ultimate flat earth Smile

I have Reactive 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 !

Some on vinyl, some on unmixed CD.

It was quite a good series, with a different 'theme ' for each one.

I've just purchased Oakenfolds - a voyage into trance.
It's Ok but even now its showing its age (2001).
I like Oakeys Swordfish movie soundtrack, and also his Bunkka compilation. Both have varying styles...
