'Dance Music...whats your favourite?'
Posted by: andy c on 26 August 2003
Hi,
Im into all sorts of the genre -particularly trance (Sasha, Bt, Air, etc). I've seen numerous entrys to this forum on classical and rock, but other than the Banco... thread below not too much on dance music (Which Naim kit plays really well by the way IMO).
So - whats your favourite and why?
You could be helping me expanf my horizions lol!

It's Ok but even now its showing its age (2001).
I like Oakeys Swordfish movie soundtrack, and also his Bunkka compilation. Both have varying styles...

sorry to be pedantic, but voyage into trance was from May 1995! I think it still sounds bang upto date though - its from the earlier days of trance in this country - the underground sounds of psy/goa trance as opposed to the current euro-pop trance which has now crossed over to the main stream.
Bunkka was also Oakenfolds artiste ablbum ie he made the tracks - not a dj compilation of other peoples tracks (a voyage into trance).
two albums Im thinking of buying are Underworlds hundred days off and sasha's airdrawndagger. what do people reckon of them?

Haroon,
well that told me didn't it!
I agree with alex's comments below re sasha. Its not what you would normally expect from him, but in a good way.
Unfortunatly I have avoided the Underword release as i thought they were somewhat losing direction recently...IMO

Naheed - Yes, the Wipeout thingumy is exactly that, and although not very long by readymix standards, is, as you say, well groovy, and possibly rare too.
I am also hooked on the GodsKitchen "Journeys" 3 CD set. I know there is a recent one which I haven't got. May have to get it.

I was very disappointed with Underworlds Second Toughest in the Infants and haven't bought anything of theirs since.
There is a new Chemical Bros thing isn't there? Any good?

Goa/psy is still underground here thank god - eurotrance is complete **** in general - though the odd cheesetastic anthem is OK...
out of curiosity, where do Astral Projection fit - are they normal trance, downtempo or what? Got "Searching for UFOs" off of "Another World" stuck in my head today and it got me thinking... It sounds ace on £4.99-from-Transient-in-clearout vinyl by the way - great cover art too...

Rasher,
I know what you mean...re Underworld.
I did take some time to get into the Sasha Cd as well, was underwhelmed initially but grew to like it...
isn't the Chemicals latest a greatest hits? I remember seeing it in Q magazine...

Underworld = Underwhelmed
I kept getting thier albums, but it mystified me how they became the indie rock/ dance crossover heroes.
Astral Projection were psy-trance weren't they - It always seemd that way to me.

Nick,
was that AR Kane of the '69' album, or Arcane Device, of the Engines of Myth and other albums?
I think the world could do with more Minogue - both the sisters have released a batch of strong singles, videos and albums recently. It is such a shame you can't get the albums on vinyl, only CD - I know I have tried and they don't exist! I have all the singles on vinyl, in up to four or five versions / remixes / promos each.

OTD - SCSI-9 - All she wants is (Robag Wruhme mix) (more wilfully obscure Russian shuffle beat)

1. performing f**king brilliantly live, esp at festivals geared traditionally more towards indie-rock
2. not sticking to the usual faceless-techno-formula-sound
thanks for the recommendations I think i'll get airdawndagger - i still dont have second toughest yet so might get wait a bit on my underworld decision yet. got dubnobass... and beaucoup fish and love them both. most people i've spoken to though think underworld are still on it and d.emersons departure hasnt been a big loss. this kind of brings me on to massive attack - my fave band of past but i reckon 100th window is too dark and has lost something with the departure of the other members, so didnt buy it.
My fav newer dance acts would be Groove Armada, Circulation, Futureshock, Hybrid and Plump DJ's.

I dunno re Astral Projection - it seems more melodic than straight psy, but then again, there's some very melodic straight psy, so maybe...
They're certainly not completely mainstream trance though - more "intelligent" then that.
I'm not averse to the poppy stuff though - I've got things like the Fragma and Sash albums knocking around - admittedly on MD though.

Just resurrecting this thread re a purchase made in the last few days:
Timo Maas - Connected (perfecto) - very well produced, with several variations of well known remixes (Placebo etc). I think this was originally released in 2001 - but still sounds fresh.
What have you been buying which youd pidgeon hole in 'dance music'? (would have put this on the 'what have you just purchased ' but that threads huge...

If you like cheesey trance then Paul Van Dyk - Reflections is rather good. Maybe a little formulaic for some tastes, but if you like his formula and I do, then it's great.
