CD5 vs CD3.5 vs CD3

Posted by: Mr_Sukebe on 12 October 2002

I've just dem'd a CD5 against other products at a similar price bracket from Arcam and MF.

Unsurprisingly, I thought the CD5 creamed it, but I did want to prove the point to myself.

Can anyone give me their experiences of directly comparing a CD5 to a 3.5 or a 3?
Strikes me that if I can get a 3 second hand for considerably less, might be worth considering, as long as it sounds similar.

Please don't suggest a CDX, I'm really not in that price bracket.
Please also don't pass comment if you're only going on heresay or what you've read. I'd like opinions from people who've really heard these units.

As I have already mentioned in another thread, I compared CD5/3.5 in a dealer dem last week, with Nait5 as preamp, 150 & Allaes.

It was no contest really, the 3.5 was steamrolled in short order. I emphasise that the 3.5 didn't sound bad per se, it was just out of its depth in a direct comparison with a player which is a generation newer. Adjectives which spring to mind are grainy, imprecise & bloated.

I took the CD5 home.

The CD5 is head and shoulders above the CD3 and the CD3.5.

I have to say it is closer to the CDX than the CD3.5.
