Mis-pressed CD's

Posted by: long-time-dead on 09 October 2003

Today I received a CD from Play.com.....

The box says "Al Di Meola - Splendido Hotel" and the disc also says similar (as one would naturally expect !)

However, playing the CD gave a surprise. Instead of hearing music I expected, there was a bloody woman singing !

I popped the CD into my PC and it turns out the artist is Karla Bonoff.

Play.com will replace it if I send it to them but I was wondering how frequent this kind of thing is (first experience for me)and does anyone collect this sort of thing ?

I have a disk that was supposed to be a music sampler from the now defunct CD-review magazine. The october 1994 sampler disk was supposed to start off with a Carole King song as listed on both the disk itself and the jewelbox. Instead there is an absolute KILLER unplugged acoustic version of Sweet Home Alabama by the Skynyrd with gorgeous slide guitar work. And this version is not released anywhere else to my knowledge. And the sound........OMFG..ultra clean, dynamic and pure. Sorry, not for sale.

You know that copying is illegal and I would never dream of doing such a thing, or even supplying my e-mail address where you could ask privately for such an illegal copy. Shame on you.

Hehe, nice post Ron. You're so slick.

Happened to me once too. I was buying a bass CD for car audio competitions and ended up getting the disc that I had been looking for in the first place but couldn't find. Boy was I surprised when I put the CD into the deck: happy surprised of course Smile

The nearest I've got to this is a mis-duplicated tape - it claimed to be a Will Smith sampler (radio promo - arrogance of youth!!!) and turned out to be (I think) Echobelly's Lustre - needless to say, it sucked.

Where did Echobelly go wrong???

I bought a David Sanborn LP (Title forgotten) many years ago, where DS is on one side and Prince's "Purple Rain" is on the other. Has anyone any suggestions on how this would have happened? I'm sure they were produced in different years.

My David Sanborn LP was "Backstreet", pressed in Germany (1983), Cat No. 92-3906-1. The Prince Tracks were from the "1999" LP, first released 27-10-82.
The "Pressed" Track Listing is:-
Prince
------
1. 1999
2. Little red corvette
3. Delirious
4. Lets pretend we'e married

David Sanborn
-------------
5. Tear for crystal
6. Bums cathedral
7. Blue beach
8. Neither one of us

As this was a stamping error, I would have thought there must be more than my copy of this LP in circulation. Are there other LP examples of Two Artists appearing together, as it should be more common than the manufacturing of CD's?

I don't know Denis, but I'd keep that record in nice shape if I were you.

I once bought a copy of Jane's Addiction's Nothing Shocking on tape. This was when the buzz on the band was beginning to grow, and so I was full of great expectations when I pressed play. Imagine my surprise to hear mediocre cock rock metal. Though the packaging said Jane's Addiction, the tape was actually Faster Pussycat's opus, Got your number off of the bathroom wall.
