Longest-owned system or component on the Forum?

Posted by: Markus on 27 January 2004

We read a lot of questions here and other posts about peoples experiences (and satisfaction) with upgrades here. This seems natural and healthy.

But I'm curious. Who here has a system or component with the greatest longevity? First consideration is for overall systems, second area of interest is to long-term components.

I'll kick things off by mentioning my 72 preamp which I've owned for about 13 years. Yes, it's been back to NANA for a service. I've used a hicap for the last 12 years, but probably I've had my LP12 for 14 years.

Others?

Rega Planar 3, RB200, RB100. Bought in 1980 and running just fine.

Ruark Talisman speakers dating from 1986. Never touched and sounding as good today as the day they finished breaking in.

Audio Innovations 25W Class A integrated, also from 1986. Extensively modified by Boarder Partol and now with a seperate PS.

NAD 4020 tuner from 1980. As good as the day it arrived but only capable of picking up a couple of FM stations because of where I live.

I've also got a Marantz CD94 and CDA94 boxed in the loft. The sound fine but the draw operation on the CDP is iffy. I can't part with them and one day might get the draw repaired (again). It's not as good as a bare CD5 (not far off though) but when I bought them in 1984/5 ish this combo was probably one of the best 16x4 players on the planet - and ut's still a beautiful bit of engineering.

Some time back in the mid 90s I gave away a tired but worthy A+R A60E and have been kicking myself ever since.

The dems which led to the purchase of the CD5 were my first times in a proper Hi Fi shop for around 15 years. It felt comfortably familiar.

Cheers

Apart from my main system I have two other systems (one my son uses and the other in Canada), both using very early 32's and 110's from the very low thousands serial numbers.

I've had the 110's since they formed part of an active Sara system with a 42x/o from about 1982/3 AFAICR. All still running fine.

You get to the point with old Naim gear where it still works so well and the sale value doesn't justify selling it. I expect eventually the amps will make it into a HT system.

Dyna Stereo Tuner. Purchased used(!) in 1971. Had it realigned once about ten years ago. Have never had to change a tube. Still works beautifully in my second set.

Ummm......my pair of NACA5. Purchased in (cough) 1997. Everything attached to them appears to have changed. How strange.

Jay

Yeah...well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Urm, not owned it that long to be honest, but my Garrard-mechanism horn gramophone from the '20s is the oldest bit of working kit I own.

In terms of what I still own, well, I still have a Pioneer stacking system from 1983 (when I was only 10) which was really my father's and is now back with him. That system includes speakers & turntable, though I wouldn't let that turntable near any of my vinyl these days Eek

Oh, and my Mum still has her Dansette, which I guess probably still works... but it's not in regular use...

LP12 from 1980, cirkus added a couple of years ago.
A pair of Kef Cantata's from 1977 (they sound remarkable for their age)
Still got my old Kef Concerto's from 1973 and a leak delta 70 amp, not sure how old the leak is though. Both still going strong in my second sistem.

...A pair of Heybrook HB2's manufactured by Mecom acoustics, as the company was known. The serial numbers are in the 6 hundreds. They were bought S/H in '83.

Unfortunately one of the fly leads from the coil to the chassis on one of the bass units is broken, at the chassis end. I believe Audax have stopped making the unit and Heybrook have shut down so they need a careful repair....?

Bang and Olufsen Beogram RX2 turntable . 1981 . Retired it two years ago (althogh still gets occasional use for nostalgic reasons).

Never changed the cartrudge either , and it still beats the cheaper pro-ject decks!

Oldest bit of my system?

My ears, vintage 1960 and despite much abuse, still there for me, every time.

They go back to the manufacturers every week or two. ( hello Mum! )

ejt.. I agree, sadly the way it has broken means it is 3 or 4 mm too short to reattach so another piece of wire would need to be grafted in and it’s not very accessible…

Audio-Technica safety raiser and cleaning vibrator, from 1980-81.

Everything else in the LP12/Naim area has been replaced several times since the 1980s. Longest owned was a pair of Linn Keilidhs, 1992-2002.

However I still have the ITT transistor radio I bought in 1972 which still works! I think it still plays 'Sounds of the Seventies'...

OK, I forgot to mention my original Edison phonograph. Still works but the recording cylinder is stuck to the spindle.
No mains or cable issues with it, and please don't tell me it matters who winds the spring!!!
And my 110 s/n is 0610 but Richard's beats mine for age.

I have a Trio KX40 Cassette deck from 1983, it was crap then and it's still crap now Big Grin
However, it sits in my garage/workshop where it feeds into an ancient Sansui receiver and Wharfdale Dentons (free from a colleague). In that context it's just about adequate

My first Naim was a NAP 250 SN 2000. Must be around '81. Sold it a couple of years ago.

I am taking this thread to the European Court of Human Rights on the basis of age discrimination.

The oldest thing I still own is, er, a DNM interconnect from 1995....Knew I should have held on to the first "serious" bit of kit I bought - a Rotel RCD965BX.

My LP12 dates from 1982, but has has new everything, the only original bits are the outerplatter, top plate and smoked lid.

My NAT 01 is from 1994, everything else is newer!
