Speakers

Has anyone experience of any of the speaker systems listed below (mid 1970s)? If so it would be great to hear about the perceived strengths and weaknesses of these speakers.

If anyone has pictures, brochures, handbooks, details of any of these and would be willing to email me copies then please contact me. (terry@allansonline.com). I will be most grateful.

If anyone is still using one of these sets of speakers within their sound system I would also be pleased to receive details of the system.

At this point I have about 10 sets of KEF speakers plus Kans and numerous other unmentionables. I am curious about any speakers which use old KEF drive units so that I can publish the info. on my site.

As I recall, there were at least three versions of this speaker. The original was loaded by this arrangement that Hi Fi Answers likened to a bunch of drinking straws stuffed into a circular cutout.

The second version, designated Celef Mini Professional SM, had "infinite baffle" loading - that is, a sealed enclosure. The SMs were replaced after a couple of years by a high-efficicency version, denoted the HE.

I owned a pair of the SM version of these speakers from December 1978 to the Summer of 1990. I started using them with a Thorens 160/SME Series II/Ortofon VMS 20E/ A&R A60 system. By the time I sold them, I was using them with an LP12/Valhalla/Ekos/Troika/Naim 72-NICAP/250 system.

I was very satisfied with their performance during that time. I recall them being very neutral-sounding as well as having fairly good "presence" and reasonably deep bass. They were certainly capable of revealing the improvements wrought by changes elsewhere in the system. Changing the wobbly Monitor Audio stands that I bought with them for a pair of Cliff Stone Foundation stands improved the performance of the speakers quite a lot. I'm only sorry that I got rid of them before I got my 52.

When I bought the Celefs, I compared them with the Monitor Audio MA4s. I thought that the Celefs were much better - much sharper and more alive.
