As much as I like Emmylou, I'm not as convinced about this one. Seems a little over-produced to me.

Uri Caine - Goldberg Variations (all 72 of 'em!)

Still not sure I can bear to hear the beloved Goldbergs mucked around with like this, although it's a far better take on them than the horrendous "Gilded Goldbergs" I borrowed from the record library a while back. There are some really odd comments in the Amazon reviews of this double CD:

Quite stunning and innovative. For me better than the original - which is saying something.

Surely some mistake!

If you liked Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" you will like this!

Hmmm, it's a big jump from Tubular Bells to this, IMHO.

Anyway, it's an interesting CD, but I'm not sure I'll play it very often.

Another little gem of happiness.

But now some quality misery:

Hi Nigel,

It is an exceptional disc and you should get it. I have the two Goulds, the Perahia as well as Andras Schiff on the piano, Celine Fritz playing the harpsichord and a lovely string arrangement by Sitkovetsky that if you have a chance you should check it out too. Ito Ema is the one I listen to most of the times.

Regards,
Haim

Thanks Haim - I've added it added to my list.

I just started a "How Many Goldbergs" thread, as my curiosity is piqued!

It might be a heresy - but I don't think much of Karajan's recordings of Beethoven...

don't much care for them either. gardiner, jochum, reiner, stokowski, szell all do better by miles.

Motivated by Nigel I pulled this off the shelf this morning. Immediately my pulse and blood pressure fell and I want to cancel all my plans and appointments for the day and dispose of all annoying electronic devices that interrupt me and track me down. Very melancholy and a pleasant change from the usual "hurried" versions.

Steve Hackett 'Reading Festival 1981' BBC broadcast.
Seeing 'Cured' made me dig this out. Always found 'Cured' too stilted by the drum machines, but there are some good songs on there, a bit 'pop', but good. The live versions bring out a bit more energy, although Hackett's voice live is less than spectacular.
