Nigel - how was the show?

Whoever recommended this, here: YOU MADE MY DAY !
This is a great piece of music making art. Can't tell how much I enjoy it. The other CD in today's JPC mail was Anja Lechner's newest, which (grrrrr) I found I alread had. This is hapening too often. I need to fight memory loss. Soon.

Well.. it was ME that was feeling nostalgic, when I saw your post. I woudl have NEVER imagined tha KW is known outside of Germany. When this was out, it was a NEW EXPERIENCE for us. But... Does it work if you can't understand the words ? Or, do you ? I mean..... Willy ? Just for the music ?
on another note: Gianmaria Testa is great for audiophiles but a marvel if you understand his Italian words...
You made me curious...

Nigel - how was the show?
Hi Adrian, here's how I described it to a friend:
Well, the concert was very, very... cold! Not sure if the RNCM was trying to make the band feel at home, or if the chill was part of the performance, but there was an icy draft in the hall. Luckily the music was absorbing, and occasionally extraordinary. It made more sense as a live experience than it's ever done on CD, as I could see where some of the stranger sounds were coming from. At one point the fiddler played a note that continuously rose in pitch, while the rest of the instruments tried to follow it, dropping out one by one, as they reached their respective limits. But the players kept going anyway, so their attempts to play a note created a kind of percussion track for the fiddler, if that makes sense. This lasted for a good five minutes, and was far better than it might sound (though I hope it sounds pretty good).
I bought Arve Henriksen's "Sakutekei" CD on the way out - highly recommended if you don't already have it.
Didn't you see Jarrett on Monday? How was it?
Regards
Nigel

Thanks Nigel. I have that Arve CD. I love his new one best though.
Jarrett was very good and well worth seeing. Had a few complaints at the audience - even stopped mid song to tell us off for coughing! It's a strange spectacle really, watching someone making it all up as he goes along. Some very good moments, some not so good but overall very worthwhile.

So the Frankfurt experience was not unique ? He stopped several times and held speeches about badly educated audiences etc., walked out, and came back. very disturbing, and between you and enjoying his (GREAT) music making.
a shame.
a shame.

Would love to get your feedback on this one.
Cheers ... Oliver
I have the original LPs, they are a little bit worn - given that I "borrowed" them from my Dad. The CD versions prior to this have not quite had the bite of the LP, but these discs are very close. The discs are listed as out of print, but worth a hunt.
Huw
PS - by bite, I mean the incredible, almost electric tension and "tuba mirum spargens sonum" of the horns that Mravinsky could generate (like no other) with his Leningraders
Huw, many thks - will see if i can find a copy.
Cheers ... Oliver

Stefan,
I grew up in Germany and went to Uni there (Goethe University - Frankfurt). I left Germany some 13 years ago and at times my language skills start to fail me but I did grow up with this kind of music.

You're kidding...
(I live in the Franfurt area
)
Now, that explains why you listen to KW. In case you haven't heard: After quite some cocain "turbulences", he's fine, today, and taking actor's jobs, etc. Singing and touring ? no, not any more. Would have liked to see him live, in his better days, but never did.
cheers

I ordered a few HMHB cd's to fill in the (wide) gaps in my collection and randomly chose this one as my starter for 10.
Hence I left for the Bon Iver concert with a wide smile on my face humming a song about a dog running onto a soccer pitch. John Peel was right "truly a National Treasure".
To wind down after a less than inspiring gig I listened to;

Beethoven Triple Concerto with a nice glass of Chateauneuf.

Well I am going to wait until the Japanese version comes out in January as no doubt Neil has put this into one of those horrible card sleeves. The Japanese version will have a nice cloth bag to drop the cd into.
Not hearing good reports about the dvd though. Seems to be a waste of cash.
