Dean,
It is worth persevering with IMHO. I know what you mean as it took me a while, but I love it now.

My god someone else in the world who appreciates the ranting genius of Cathal Coughlan. Saw Fatima Mansions a couple of times and boy was he angry then. My favourite MD album is

currently going for £38.99 second hand at amazon - if only me record player was rigged up

After all the chat about the MoFi re-issue recently, I dug out my (Atlantic Records!) original. Not played for donkeys. Good record.

Hi Dean, there's loads of good stuff on ACT, but I think [em], the German piano trio, take some beating. They bring gothic and contemporary classical influences to jazz, and have a sound like no other band I can think of. You can hear samples from their last two albums on their MySpace page:
[em]
Their pianist, Michael Wollny has a solo CD called "Hexentanz" (Witches Dance) which is also excellent (and quite spooky).
ACT's two albums by Alboran Trio are also great, but may not be sufficiently different from EST for you.
Regards
Nigel
