At the moment, I'm so happy because not 1 hour ago my very kind Post Lady showed up at my door (and no, she didn't come on a Ski-Doo or by dog sled) with a nice package I've been impatiently waiting for.

Among other things, in this cold package was.....

The Images I/II and Etudes are phenomenal. Listening to the four volumes, one thing that is a real highlight for me is the fantastic piano that Bavouzet picked. I'm very envious of the nice lady who lent her Steinway model D to be used for these recordings. Just listen to the lower registers and how the most beautiful bass voice comes out with such warmth....

So far I have Bavouzet's Vol 1 & 3 but I am planning to get the other two real soon.

Another pianist who plays Debussy and Ravel with a magic touch is Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Have you had a chance to hear is playing?

Regards,
Haim

Yes, I have the Michelangeli recordings. They are exceptional recordings as well that get a lot of play time here too.

To compare the two, I'd say Michelangeli's Debussy strives to create many distinct layers of sound that are meant to be kept apart if you know what I mean but on the other hand, Bavouzet strives to build color and texture through an integration process. It's like the wind or waves; something is always going on within - a swirling or pulsing - it's unpredictable but it takes you somewhere and you never know quite where.

I'm just very glad to have both choices now.

I bought this expecting to be disappointed (because of the Fortepiano) but I was pleasantly taken aback at how dynamic and engaged this group is. I've learnt & played this C- minor trio and this take on it had me on the edge of my seat; it just flies with excitement and you get the real feeling what a young, up and coming guy like Beethoven was doing to prove himself. Poor old papa Haydn was probably wondering where he went wrong with this kid...

Andras Schiff: Beethoven Piano Sonatas and the penultimate plus the final Cd to complete the series. I expected this to be great and it certainly is (as are the previous 6 Volumes). Very, very good and highly recommended.
