Billie Holiday - complete Decca recordings

~<>~ Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975) ~<>~
Symphony no.8
Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Kyrill Kondrashin
A MELODIYA / H.M.V. recording, released in Australia exclusively by World Record Club
The lp cover says this is one of 'fourteen' symphonies he has wrote to date, so he obviously had not died at the time this lp production, (he went on the write a fifteenth).
This symphony he composed in 1942, and those very harsh times are reflected in the music, and often to very dramatic effect.

Thank You FlyMe, I've ordered it!
Melodiya also have a box set of Shostakovich's symphonies, i noticed it was 44ukp last year but during December the price went up to 64ukp. I'm really hoping the price will fall again to a price i can afford because that set looks very, very, very, very tempting indeed.
Yes, i've purchased far too many cd's from this forums influence, and i expect that by the time we retire the cd format will have been replaced by something much better too!
But we may also go deaf or dense by then so don't wait, get listening now! ; )
best regards

The discs sampled thus far make this an absolute steal at the price

Yes, perhaps they are controlled by market forces?
The complete quartet box set is still looks quite good value for money, and not likely to gather any dust on my cd shelve!
Amazon have despatched my copy so i may receive it tomorrow morning with a bit of luck! : )
The Shostakovich lp i played earlier is just one of the symphonies that's been digitally remastered (and probably to perfection by Melodiya) within the symphony box set...
Symphony no.8 Moscow PSO conducted by Kyrill Kondrashin, and despite being dramatic, moody and appallingly dark, imho this music is highly enjoyable! : )
Kind Regards ~

Stefan - not this time I am afraid. In Oz we always for some strange reason were the first to get ECM releases but not here in the UK. I was listening to the album via clips on the ECM Player on their website. No real opinion yet on how they sound until I get the CD's proper. They are out on the 23rd and 30th in Germany.
