Agh just found a small dent on the disc surface that makes it skip on track 9.

Will have to send it away to a scratch repairers. Just as well EAC reads the disc.

No rats, no google - just know my music!! Smile Now do I get those Barry Manilow prizes or not? I tried this album out about six months ago(it was released in March in Oz) one sunny Saturday afternoon (they are almost always sunny)at my favourite record store, Title Film and Music in Surry Hills Sydney. Did n't grab me enough to buy it at the time. Maybe I should give it another go?

For now, the superb No-Man

DANIEL BREL - Quatre chemins de melancolie

Hello Haim,

It took me until track 3 before i started to get into it. Sometimes my mind needs time to adapt when confronted with a peculiar music style.
But i can say now that after playing the album, on a few occasions, i do actually like Daniel Brel's 'Quatre chemins de melancolie'. As far as i'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with jazzing up a few basse viols for 21st Century culture.
I think it may be dangerous though... i lent my copy to a colleague-friend. He handed it back to me after the weekend and said that he could only get as far as track 6, he also said he really hated it, and 'it does what is says on the tin'... I think he'd been crying too! : (

What do you think of it, Haim? : )

Nymph,

I saw your posting of the disc (which is far from being a typical straight forward classical Alpha disc) and I decided to go for it after sampling it on their site.

I like it a lot though I think it takes more than a few listenings to get into it. I always have to be more patient with modern music which quite often is less melodic.

A similar very good disc and easier on the ear which I recommend is Dino Salluzi's Kultrum (music for bandoneon & strings):

Even your friend might like it.

Hello Miles,

Go ahead and buy this one, it's very good ; )

If you are familiar with the film, 'Master and Commander' (in the scene when the Captain and Doctor are playing cello and violin)... a couple of tracks on this 'Short tales for a Viol' are of the same kind of tune.
This cd is however a solo viol played very beautifully by Vittorio Ghielmi, and is imo very relaxing and great for late evening. It's an album that starts of a bit dry but just keeps on getting better as it goes on ~

I noticed you recently played a JSB Violoncello W&W which is tempting me a lot but seems to be unavailable in the uk!

I bet it's very good, do you recommend it? : )

Nymph,

it is absolutely outstanding, just got it recently here in Australia. Will see if I can get the above as well.

Cheers ... Oliver
