Free 7" single from the DLD album by Nick Cave & the BS, the first 7" I've played in 20 odd years.

2. Allegetto 5'18
3. Largo... 12'08
4. Allegro non troppo... 10'50
Symphony no.6 in B minor, op54
5. Largo... 13'29
6. Allegro... 6'08

Moscow Philharmonics Orchestra
Kirill Krondrashin conductor
Recordings of 1967
[ADD] Stereo Melodiya cd @ Jan 2007
Whilst driving home in my car within the damp, dark very early hours of this morning, i tuned on to bbc radio 3 to find the sound of orchestral works.... and what i heard didn't impress me; a boring meaningless mush of orchestral meanderings that became very repetitive, until finally a loud killer-driller throb of an ending that couldn't come soon enough. In fact i only listened it out to hear the dj declare who was responsible for such heinous composition as so I may avoid it in futureā¦
To my great shock it was none other than Shostakovich's Symphony No 5 in D minor performed by the BBC Philharmonic with Gianandrea Noseda conducting!
However, having played this symphony again at home (on Melodiya CD) , I happily confirm the allegro non troppo is actually a very delicate, spacious to loudly weighty but quite coherent sound when performed by the Krondrashin MPSO version! : )

Well Nymph - perhaps the conductor was trying to convince us of Shostakovich's alleged description of the ending of the 5th.
"The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, as in Boris Godunov. It's as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, "Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing," and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering, "Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing."
Not all that convinced myself about such an interpretation - but I agree, it's easy to overplay it.

Ewemon,
Night & Day is his most commercially successful outing. The most recent release 'Rain' is pretty good. The aforementioned Night Music has some almost classical pieces on it.
I guess one can sample many things on Itunes/amazon these days so have a prowl.
cheers

I guess this works very well with Chelsea FC supporters too!

Scarlett Johansson covering Jeff Buckley's 'Last Goodbye' - rather lovely. Quite a Rickie lee Jones 'Pirates' vibe. Listen here

I think I like looking at her more than listening to her.

Thanks Jeff - I'll check it out.
I'm also interested in the Fiona Apple album you posted - how would you describe it?

My all time favorite. Mendelssohn Trios by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. I had in in vinyl and later bought the Vox box CD with the Brahms Trios added at bargain price.
Priceless performance
