MM, can you do a piece on the difference between these various CDs you collect? I don't always follow what makes them special/different.
Do you buy mostly on line or do just have access to loads of stores, where you are?
Cheers

Howard,

I buy most of the 'collectable CDs' online - on other forums. While I love to chase some of them down in used CD stores, I just don't have enough opportunity/time to do this.

I started collecting 'audiophile' recordings like DCCs or MoFi's since they were originally issued in the late 80s / early 90s (many of them on Gold CD).

More recently I got into collecting first CD pressings - CDs issued when they first came out around '82 to '84.

One line of collectable CDs are called target CDs (the ones I posted above). They were the first CDs issued for the US market from the two CD plants in existance at the time - one in Germany and the other in Japan. They got their name from the unique design which looks like a shooting target.

The other line of collectable first pressings are the first CDs issued in Japan for the Japan market - some of them have as well a unique design (3/4 black or a black triangle on silver stock) but are easily recognizable by their catalogue numbers. The most valuable are the very first ones which have 35DP as catalogue numer. The 35 stand for their price at the time of 3500 Yen. These were followed by 32DPs - you can guess, they were sold for 3200 Yen.

Now in addition to this there are many other first or second pressings that are collectable like black or red face CDs (all black or all red design) issued in Japan and Germany.

Some of these first pressings are not only collectable but are as well considered the best version on CD around. Great sound and scarcity can make them very expensive - and I do mean very expensive.

Ewen posted a thread the other day of a still sealed 35DP Pink Floyed CD which changed hands on e-bay for $5500. Not for the faint hearted. Winker

Cheers ... Oliver

You got me envious - enjoy. Cool

I think these AP remasters were also released as a limited release CD set as well. I have not really found a CD that matches my original UK first pressing of Monk's Music (mono vinyl), but if AP have managed to get the CDs to sound as good as the vinyl then the set might be worth tracking down. Brilliant Corners is sublime.
