Mark Kozelek's gentle, beautiful album of early AC/DC covers. Working late!

Knowing both sets thoroughly I tend to say, that the older mono set (the one released by Documents) is more satisfying from a musical point of view. The newer stereo set is - yes stereo, but the sound quality is not that much better than the mono set. The only real advantage of the stereo set is, that it contains the AoF (this is the reason for the two extra CDs), but the AoF is also available separately.

Hi naim_nymph:

What a coincidence, I played this one a couple of days ago : ) So what do think? Is it a keeper?

By the way, I've been drooling over all the wonderful vinyl you've been playing recently! I wish I could find some of those treasures.

A belated reply to Stephen and Nigel:
After nearly wearing this one out you might say that I've come to rather like this one and have come to terms with some minor initial skepticism and reservations.

Except for the Concerto, I have the scores for everything else and have tinkered about with most of the selections on this album myself. All I can say is I very much like what Helene does and I find her to be an exceptional musician. She adheres to the written score quite remarkably but the musical energy, and depth she mines out and finds as well as her voicing always amazes me. Of course, I listen with an open mind, too and try to understand what her perspective or approach is. In a word, I invariably feel joy after listening to this. Ending with the Rachmaninov arrangement of the Violin Partita No. 3 just seals the deal for me though. I can't imagine anyone not finding joy from that account and this music.

One reservation I initially had was concerning the Busoni Chaconne in d-. Well, it took some time to ween myself off the unbelievable account from Mikhail Pletnev (live at Carnegie Hall). Now, I appreciate both accounts and am so glad for both. Pletnev's is more dramatic and he takes all kinds of risks (at the expense of note perfect) and Helene's is possibly more staid and possibly more intellectual (to me) and definitely is bang on from the score.

So their was my ultra biased views : ) (Disclaimer: I have pretty much everything Helene Grimaud has recorded and I can't think of anything that I don't like).

Regards,
Doug

Haim,
Thanks for this recommendation. It finally came last week and I'm very glad to add this one to my Chopin collections (even though I think I overpaid for it : (

Hello pe-zulu,

Thank you very much for pointing the differences!...
i have HW's art of fuge on cd anyway so i guess this Documents box set was a good purchase for me.
I'm also proud to boast that even after enjoying the first two discs i never noticed it was a mono reproduktion! : )

kind regards ~

VDJ-1556

Ewen,

as you invest in your Jazz collection I can highly recommend the VDJ-1500 series. These Japanese first pressings are still relatively affordable and I have yet to be disappointed by one of them.

Cheers ... Oliver

Hello Florstan,

As far as you and i are concerned it's a keeper! : )

... but wouldn’t recommend it to anyone due to it’s rather dry and sensible composition coupled with the slightly wonderfull wonkiness of viol-sound, I could understand it not being everyone’s cup of tea.
This is however, viol music I shall return to because it isn’t an album I find easy to get used to or bored with.
Personally I really love it, but then again I’m besotted with the viol sound anyway, so I would say this is one for the more committed viol musik lover.

It would be great to find some viol and viola de gamba musik on vinyl, but that really is as rare as hens teeth. I'll keep looking though!
