Not like any other Haden you own. I did not play it all the way through as my car journey completed before the CD but i was enjoying it a lot. Nice to see you back here.

Anybody has listened to the new Bebo & Cigala ?

In case you want recommendations, here are two that I listen(ed) to, today, and like:

The astonishing third "volume" (and both other recordings are also amongst my fave's)

and the fantastic (this is only the second Widmann, where the first one is so much more than an eyebrow raiser !)

Today started out by comparing the Franck "Violin" sonata played first by Jacqueline Du Pre:

with Pierre Fournier:

Anyone have any recommendations on this as well: Is your favorite version played by a violinist or a cellist?

Stefan: as usual thanks for your good recommendations. I know that anything that you have posted here or talked about could easily fit in my library and listening tastes.

Thanks,
Doug

Way too much honor, Doug. But, seriously: thanks for your nice and warm feedback ! And, since you ask: I specifically like the Widmann Schumann, because she's not riding on the boring side of it. Schumann can be SO boring. Her (and Várjon's) tone is young, fresh, exciting, without being disrespectful or desperately modernistic. I enjoy them a lot. Just my opinion, of course.

Hope you're well and enjoy life and music !

cheers
Stefan

Hi Stefan, good to see you back - you know a lot of us rely on you for good recommendations, right? How does Norrland III compare with volume II (Cow Cow)? I bought the latter, along with about twenty other CDs at Saturn records in Ko:ln recently - I was in absolute awe of the jazz selection in that shop! The Schumann seems to be picking up lots of favourable comment, so I might give that a try. I'm also very keen to hear the Scelsi CD on ECM New Series, after hearing an item about modern Italian composers on Radio 3 at the weekend - do you know that one?

Right now I'm listening to Trevor Pinnock playing Scarlatti - great, but rather lively, and I'm worried that it will keep me awake later!

Regards
Nigel

~<>~ Franz Schubert ~<>~

Trio, in B flat major

Op. 99 (D 898)

Lev Oborin piano
David oistrakh violin
Sviatoslav Knushevitsky cello

On the black stuff... one of the first lp's to be played on my recently set up sondek.
The sound is a little bass light, and with some snap, crackle and pop, (it's a Trio!)
...but the musik is coming though nicely! : )

MOZART ON THE HARPSICHORD

including the first compositions of the 5-year-old Wolfgang plus the Solos and Duet Sonata composed in London when he was 8.

ERIK SMITH (and with Humphrey Burton)

The hapsichord used on side 1 is a model of a Taskin of 1769 by Robert Davies (Levens, Cumbria),
and that on side 2 is a Robert Goble (Oxford)

Philips 'stereo record'

Everything i'm hearing from this lp is delightfull! : )
