I did n't ask. I complemented you on your choice. Winker. I just checked out his myspace. One track has been played 33 million times!

Same here - snow through the morning and now not insignificant wind chill. Had hoped a 2nd Powerline might have helped warm things up but unfortunately the Posty did not deliver. Still, no complaints ...

As my slow march through Mahler's Symphonies continues I bought this performance from the early 60's and my god is it a long one.

Does anyone have this on the SACD? How does this sound in stereo hybrid?
(sorry only just saw you were playing the LP, mono I presume).

I remember the early mono to stereo conversions on some re-releases in the 70's with very strange channel mixing. I presume this is far more subtle.

I have the mono CD, and think it is a fantastic recording, as well as music and performance (and also one of my favourite album covers - a bit of a winner all round).

Just interested to know if the SACD release adds to the album.

Jamie, I have many versions of this disc, none beats the original mono slab of vinyl (US slightly beats UK and Japanese versions). The OJC LP and CD stereo reissues aren't too bad, but the SACD went back.

Between this and Blues for the Fisherman (Milcho Leviev and Art Pepper), these are on my constant search list. Can't have enough versions, it seems

Thanks for that.

I have a mono CD issue by Riverside Masterpiece series - digital remaster - (so it claims), manufactured by Victor Musical Industries in Japan 1985, from a master recording owned by Fantasy Records USA.

It used to skip on my old Arcam Alpha (but plenty of other CDs did too), it is fine on the Naim CD5x. I worry that it might deteriorate and might need replacing some day.

It really is an amazing album, I love Monk, but as a drummer Art Blakey is really one of my favourites. The last time I saw 'The Jazz Messengers' they opened with Epistrophy*, lovely performance, even if it didn't have Monk.

Jamie

(*Astrophysicist - is suggested by the spell check)

PS. This is currently living in the CD player, at least the third playing today:
