Victory at Sea by Richard Rodgers, is 13 hours long!

Have to finish the weekend with one of my fave albums - it was this or Fear of a Blank Planet. Both involve Steve Wilson. This is a bit more night time. I haven't played it for , well about 12 hours.

Borrowed from the web Review 1

"Damnation is a complex and often acoustic album that demonstrates beyond question Opeth's high regard for the sweet harmonies and post-psychedelic atmospherics of '70s rockers such as Camel, Steve Hackett, and, especially, Barclay James Harvest. Which isn't to say this is a retro album; the aforementioned bands have been left out of rock history to such a degree that it's as if they never existed at all. Then there's Opeth's own pedigree. Steeped in the bloodier aspects of metal, singer Mikael Akerfeldt has no time for sweet love or fanciful flights of fantasy; he's trapped in post-relationship depression, drowning in loneliness and regret. His voice drifts beautifully over and under the band's dark folk and hypnotic soft-rock progressions, as chiming twin guitars that recall Wishbone Ash drop casually in and out. This music is intense and often moving—even without the shouting."

Review 2

"Opeth has knocked me out with Damnation (the “companion” album to last year’s Deliverance), a darkly beautiful album that shows there’s more to the group than just pounding death metal.

Opeth has always shown a real knack for the softer progressive moments, normally including them as movements within the structures of fearsome metal epics. On Damnation, Opeth eschew death metal in toto, opting instead to explore a more subtle approach using acoustic guitars, mellotron (courtesy of producer Steven Wilson), and Mikael Akerfeldt’s emotive vocals. The combined talents of Opeth and Wilson are put to the test here, balancing layers of instruments and vocals to create a deceptively simple, melancholy atmosphere, and both succeed admirably. Plucked-string guitar melodies serve as the framework for most of the songs; underneath the two Martins (Lopez and Mendez) construct alternately simple and complex rhythmic foundations, while Akerfeldt and Peter Lindgren adorn the acoustic lattice with mournfully elegant electric solos. Akerfeldt’s wondrous vocals hang clearly in the fore, like shimmering water droplets suspended on a spider’s web, while producer Wilson adds spot-on (uncanny?) harmonies and lends a somber gloom with accents from the mellotron and synthesizer. Oddly dynamic arrangements demand strict attention from the listener, especially during “Closure”, which dances to a tabla-driven, Middle-eastern style conclusion.

A daring gamble on the Opeth’s part, Damnation is a huge winner that pays off handsomely for discriminating rock listeners. Diehard death metalheads may hate it, but progressive rock fanatics will find plenty to love and should definitely give Damnation some serious attention."

Tift Merritt - Another Country

Just watched the DVD that came with this album - wish guitarist Marc Bonilla would learn to shut-up so I could hear Emo playing - wonder if I could get hold of that software that lets you rip the Foxtrot CD to iTunes and edit out the drumming and use it to exorcise Mr Bonilla.

The CD is fine, it is only on the live DVD, I find his contribution OTT.
